You know what you're right. Youve shown at least one example where it screams consistent superstar goes and gets paid and quits.

What should we do with Eichel and Reinhart in two years?

Probably trade them. They are going to be making good money and we don't want them stinking up the room with their most likely attitude problems.

Soon those 30-33 year Olds making ~15% will be.
Ovechkin
Crosby
Malkin
Kane
Toews
Kopitar.

What do all of those players have it common?

Nope. They are top 10 players in the league. Just like Stamkos is. You pay those guys that kind of money.

There are no 30-33 Year olds making 15% because all the guys making that kind of money are still under 30.

Add - Ovechkin has a good shot to get his this year.

He's also 32, and he scored 52 points last year. He's got 41 this year so far, but like I said he's 32 it's natural to slow down. But he also doesn't really rely on his "speed" like some guys, so he can be productive and just stand in front of the net like he has his entire career and pack another 80 goals in before he quits.
- Wetbandit1

I get that but the point I'm trying to make is ........... he went to where he wanted to play all along ... to a city that wanted him all along and paid him ............ and they got what in return?

It happens in every sport ... maybe not in hockey as much as in football . but it does happen. Players get paid for "what they did" ... not necessarily for "what they'll do"

They haven't won anything on those deals?

No one has won on their current deal.

Crosby had the same $8.7M cap hit when they won. Malkin was also only making $984,000 the year they won the cup, so... yeah.

Kane and Toews had a combined $12.6M cap hit last year. which is only 60% of their current combined cap hit.

Kopitar had a $6.8M cap hit last time they won.

Ovechkin hasn't won Richard.

Players get paid for what they'll do all the time. Look at Tyler Myers. What they very rarely do is get paid what they're worth currently. They either get paid a ton of money before they're worth it and don't live up to it, take a discount in money for term and way outperform their deals, and then get a massive contract when they're not going to get any better.

Indeed it is a joke that the Canucks are paying him $7 million a year for the next 2 years on a 4 year contract to score 20-25 goals a season ...... this of course after averaging about 35 goals per year the previous 5-6 years.

Well hopefully we win a cup in the next two years because if we don't history above shows us we never will. Also if we sign Stamkos we won't either.

Top 5 would be great. I want to be in 4th last or better though because worst case scenario most likely only one team behind us would go into top 3 and then we'd pick 5th and get top D. Much better scenario. 3rd last I think is the golden spot.

For sure. Good point
Maybe we just finally have some luck go our way...

At least not with this cycle of players. I think we have more than 2 years especially if we're able to move some pieces.

I think we did the same thing when we signed Ruhwedel...
Told him he could play the rest of the year in Buffalo, but then next season he'd have to compete for a roster spot

Also...
We currently have 3 goalies in Rochester & they're competing for a playoff spot, so it was doubtful he'd get any games there anyways
Maybe we told him he'd get a couple games up here

- jdfitz77

they did, but Ruhwedel was a free agent

You might want to recheck his goals scored over the 5-6 year period.

He avg 26.5
