And I think his very reasonable contract/RFA situation factored heavily into GMTM's decision to trade for him.

Think that might have had something to do with Teddy's system?
- fastek

Padded stats. Teams had us beat by the 3rd. So they would dump low % shots on net. Average goalies werent good enough last season. We needed an awful goalie to out tank other teams. Finished with 54 points. Right now with almost 20 games left only 1 team has less points than that ,Toronto 52.

Or GMTM believed the guy could becaome the cornerstone of his team for years to come. I think this was the case in fact.

Why? Because we have cap problems? He traded the pick for him because he believed he was a damn good goalie. I don't see what's so hard about that to figure out. His contract status was a minor factor at most.

I didn't like the trade when it happened, and was really disappointed when he got hurt one period into the season. I was fearful of how he'd look when he came back, but he's been pretty damn good. He's still very young, so if he's on an upward trajectory from where he's at now, we're not going to have to worry about the goalie position for a long time.

Actually GMTM mentioned in his presser that the fact they control his rights longer played an important role

Murray mentioned his contract and RFA status at the press conference. Maybe I read too much into it then?

Per Gamecenter alert:

Lundqvist, Nash, M Staal and McIlrath all not making trip to Buffalo

I'm going with Jvince to his first home game tommorow. Looks like his odds to see a win just got better.

Probably not ......... just seems silly for that to have come up IMO.

You trade a 1st round pick because you believe the guy you're getting is a stud .......... what you pay him and for how long seems like it should be way down the list.

Compared to the other goalies on the market at the time, it was a pretty key factor I'd think. Not only to get him for what is left on his contract, but I believe he was the only one with Restricted time left. That gives even more benefit to the team that got him because they have that much more control over the next contract.

Obviously he was targeted for his skill - and Murray being part of the team behind scouting an drafting him was huge - but the bonus of control on the next contract is big.

1) Yes, talent wise I really do believe that he does (or at least close to it)

2) Sort of. There's no guarantee we would've taken white but it's more of what that prospect could've brought back in another deal down the line (like drouin) I think average goaltending + drouin or his defence equivalent does more for us than Lehner. I maintain that in most cases the goalie is a product of the team in front of him save for the truly elite and the truly awful.

3) Of course there are other ways, but you're not going to like what they ask for.

Is there any chance we can get boedker? What would he ask for? He just left Arizona which leads me to believe he wants to stay away from rebuilds. Even though we are much closer.

I'm not sure how much closer we are than the Yotes. Standings tell us we're almost identical. Before the season started, I thought we'd be way ahead of them. Declair and Domi doing some nice things out there, and OEL is envied by about every other team in the league.

He's gonna be a UFA, so I'm sure we could make a play for him
Idk if we should though
I think it was WGR that I was listening to and they were talking about how most of his scoring is on the PP, and he's pretty ineffective 5 on 5
He's a speedy player, but considering we'd prob have to overpay for him, it prob wouldn't be a good signing for us

As a GM, Timmy HAS to be very concerned with how much his starting goalie is paid, and how long his rights are under his control. It's a big and important part of the job. The first rounder exchanged says a lot about his faith in the player, a guy he scouted and drafted.

This trade (along with all the rest of them) is going to be debated and argued over for years. I'm really hoping we're on the winning side of this one.
