I'm just saying Ghost started the whole thing then skated away. We'd be feeling differently if it was the opposite. We'd all be saying "what did he expect to happen when he instigated!?"
- PhillySportsGuy

Yeah, this crap happens all the time. This is why, as long as they can skate, I'd really like to see the Flyers add more size, grit and nastiness on their 3rd and 4th lines. They are a pretty small team and get pushed around a lot, and I don't want Simmonds, who is a key offensive player, having to handle all the rough stuff. Add a few big, mean wingers and Sam Morin on D and I think you will see the whole team start to feel a lot braver.

I have never said that. I've always said they are both legit starters and they're not going to be able to afford to keep both.

lol! SSB approved

I must be misremembering. I thought that you and one of J35/AllIn (I confuse them) were beating the "We should keep Neuvirth and deal Mason," drum.

It's subjective depending upon the arena and who is counting the chances. lol
- Scoob

It is, but I also said +/- which is less subjective than totals...also out of the 16 teams in playoff position, only 5 have a negative scoring chance differential

I guess, it's not that big a deal. It's just bush league to react like that to a push that happens probably a million billion times per game. The head is a no no.

Isn't the +/- just the difference in the totals?

Agreed, a shove calls for a double-handed shot the side head of a player who's looking away.

Next you'll be telling me that Wayne Simmonds didn't sucker punch a completely innocent Ryan McDonagh.

I still wanna know how 2 separate minors and one double-minor evened up to 5-on-5.

- jmatchett383

Relax, you do know I'm a flyers fan right? I didn't even say anything was justified. All I said was Ghost gave him a late shove before this which did happen.

yes...the knock on scoring chance totals is that some arenas give out more than others...similar to how some refs call a game tight or not

therefore, if you play in an arena that is stingy on scoring chances, it will likely effect you both for and against

Can't wait for someone to nudge Gudas and for Gudas to put him in a coma with a 2-handed slash to the face with no repercussions.

Not me. I once quoted/commented on a post that mentioned Mason and his frequent injuries for which people jumped all over me pointing out that Neuvirth has them, too. Calm the frank down, Masonites. lol

Mason was a legit starter when the season began. Still is.
Neuvirth has become a legit starter this season.
Both will want to be paid as such when their deals are up next year.
Imho, the Flyers can't afford to pay for two starters so one is going to have to go.

Medvedev and Schultz
- PhillySportsGuy

one of those is correct...

A: Medvedev
B: Manning

And oh yeah...of course Brandon Manning will return...Medvedev got turnstiled on a goal by McDavid. Got to sit him. The Flyers corps of mistake free D who don't make any poor plays and never allow bad goals can't let him ruin things for the rest of them.

(Scapegoat, get your scapegoat here!)

- Mononoke

McDavid had so much speed I don't think any of our D would have been able to prevent that goal.

Last night was probably the game that rules them out of playoff contention, so if they play Manning the rest of the way it might help with the draft. On the positive side, the home loss that ended their playoff hopes in my mind last year came in mid-February on a Vinny turnover. So there's been some progression in terms of roster and results this season.

Right. But that said, what is a viewed as a scoring chance one minute might not be viewed the same the next minute. Also, an arena that gives out higher numbers will likely favor the home team. It's like "hits."

I don't know. I'd rather just build the roster around skill and force the opposing team to match their 4th line with a skilled 4th line. To me, there's nothing sadder than watching a Tanner Glass chase around forwards trying to instigate when no one cares.

I know Manning is the worst, but I assumed he wouldn't be last because he hasnt played nearly as many games as Schultz. It is amazing that he continues to play over Medvedev in some instances.

Last night there were 20 games to pass the Pens in the standings...tonight there are 19...thats really all that changed. We would love for them to chip away each night, but that is not always realistic. The games remaining against them will keep them in range of the playoffs, the Flyers just have to try to win each game

Same thing with shots and shot attempts. The Devils scorers are really stingy.

He wasn't bad last night, he was okay. Yeah, his rebounds were bad, but he played well enough to give the team a chance to win. Flyers were careless with the puck and on their backchecks. And they still could have won.
- jmatchett383

To a point yes, but when that is happening, it would be a good thing for the goalie to be corralling those rebounds to settle everything down, instead of having everyone scrambling around trying to adjust.

It happened a LOT last night. Including the first goal. Neuvy needs to get that puck.

is that possible? sure...is that the most likely scenario? no

in the data that I referenced over the course of the season...I think there is a small enough error to make the conclusion I was getting at

In review:
If you get crosschecked in the head, it's unreasonable to throw a gloved rabbit punch (
If you poke a guy in the chest (more of a loving, caring caress), it's reasonable to litrilly be decapitated (i.e. murder)

this is a reasonable takeaway

I turned it off before that scuffle.

Wow. I never really had a reason to hate the Oilers, but I hate them now and I hope they stay poopty with Laine too.

Oh wait. They will. Because that the name of the game for that pathetic organization.

I just think it's a silly statistic. A shot that hits the post has no shot of going in is a "scoring chance" yet Legwand's goal from his own circle the other night is not. Obviously just 2 cases, one extreme, but still my point. The Flyers lost a playoff game in 1995 on a shot that wasn't a "scoring chance."
