With the addition of 3v3 is a SO specialist as important?
- J35Bacher

Maybe it happens less now, but having the 6 points we lost in shootouts this year puts us in the playoffs right now.

You are correct, they did lose. Since then however, they've been able to add to their roster, win games, make the playoffs and go on deep runs. We however have lost depth.
- SuperSchennBros

You realize the additions to their roster included getting rid of their shootout specialists, right?

In 5 on 5 play, you have to win faceoffs with consistency to gain posession.

Gain, but not necessarily keep:

So we should assume they go 8-0? Based on league average they have only lost 2 points (4-4)

so when you say "specialist" you really just mean "someone that is really good at something"

faceoffs are not the only way to gain possession and although I dont have the numbers, I highly doubt they are even the most common way possession changes. There are players who are very good at faceoffs that get handled in possession metrics. how could that be?

you arent wrong with what you want the result to be, but I dont think you are right in how you get there. You dont go looking for a guy who is good at faceoffs or shootouts...you get good players who happen to excel in those areas as well

- YuenglingJagr

Isn't this what a specialist is?

I never implied that we get a player who is only good at one thing. Every player has corsi of things that do well. This would be lazy management if a GM picked up a player only and specifically for the shootout.

Recap of Hextall's remarks at the STH meeting last night.

http://www.hockeyforums.n...p-2016-hexy-presentation/

"Quite honestly, if I'm a betting man we are going to have 1 or 2 of the young guys up with the Flyers at the beginning of the year and as the year goes on maybe even more."

Hextall also said they're looking for size & skill at LW/C and RHD in the draft, there's no risk of losing Schenn, that Morin is having a good year, and he lauded Bellemare for being unselfish and only caring about the team winning.

that is fine if you want to use that as your definition...id just come out and say that from the beginning though. I think the word specialist has a connotation that a player is really only known for and good at one particular facet of the game. At least for Richards and Pronger, you called them specialists, but really they were two of the best players in the league at the time.

So yeah...if specialist = one of the best players in the league, yes I want the Flyers to get a bunch of specialists

You are overly focused on one thing I've said. I gave a number of examples when using the term specialist. Since we are going to focus on this one area, the Rangers weren't that bad in that area before, so I guess they could afford to part ways with those players. I'm not even sure if Jokinen or Christianson are in the league anymore nearly 7 years later.

Alright, so I ask what do Raffl, Bellemare and Medvedev specialize in as we pick up players in their mid 20's to early 30's over seas who were never really developed to play in the NHL? Players who have held their own but seem to be more of a plug as we develop players who are more suited and develop to fill these holes.

A specialist is a guy who excels at one thing. For example, when you go see an "eye specialist", you don't ask him to take a look at your knees as well. If you want a guy who excels at certain things and is adequate/good at other areas, that's another story.

Raffl brings some size and they both bring speed and forechecking prowess. Raffl drives possession and is responsible, can play anywhere in the lineup. I have said that Bellemare needs to be replaced though.

Medvedev is loaded with skills...doesnt seem to have translated to play an effective game on a daily basis, but i dont consider him a problem. was it worth the risk of signing him to a 1 year 3 million dollar deal? absolutely

and yes, we are developing players to fill these holes after years of trading picks

In 09/10, when the Rangers had 2 shootout specialists (3 if you could Parenteau) and one of the best (if not the best) goalie in the league, they had the exact same shootout record as the Flyers.

I don't think anyone's going to disagree that the Flyers need to improve at the shootout. Bringing in a hired gun who is below average at 5v5 but excels at the shootout wouldn't be the way I'd go about it.

For the record, I am disagreeing with the notion, I am not attacking you.

Edit: The Flyers need to improve in a lot of areas. Faceoffs and shootouts are two of them.
