I don't disagree about not trading the first rounder. If you read what a wrote and maybe I didn't convey it correctly. The Sabres want stamkos at all costs. They don't want a mario Williams situation to come up . If he hits open market anything can happen. They believe if they get him in a trade(which they already know he would be willing to come here) they will sign him. They will make sure it is a trade and sign
- Buffalo39

I still don't buy this, especially with the leafs involved.

That was a good decision

Eichels draft he had to get him. This draft is more about how can you get 91. I am not saying they gI've up first rounder, but it was said we would IFwe had to,to get him

Why there is no need to, Tampa is at the front of the line before anyone. If talks do start there is no need to give up anything.
- SABRES 89

It would make sense if they get assurances from his agent they can get it done. If you can almost guarantee you can get a deal done before he hits the market, you do it, especially after the Babcock fiasco. The Sabres still don't have the bargaining power on an even playing field.

Don't be so sure, there are GM's out there that don't feel he is a 10 mill a year player. As of now it's not about money with Stamkos it's about respect to which as of now, Tampa hasn't shown him.

I am telling you, the Sabres will tryto do everything to get stamkos in a draft day deal. You can believe or not. It is in bbuffalo, they need to make a splash
- Buffalo39

I really hate the idea that where a draft is held supersedes what is best for the team.

In my opinion, the fact that the draft is in Buffalo should not be a factor on any decisions. At all.

Th sabres believe they have a a lot to offer 91. They know they can pay any amount that another team can,but they don't want him to negotiate with them. If sabres give him 2 to 4 million a year more then Tampa and make it long term, they can get him

With all due respect, this is exactly what they said about Babcock. Unfortunately it isn't just about the team, the city is going to be a factor and the fact that Toronto is home may be the x factor.

Fair enough.then let me put it this way. PEGULA WANTS STAMKOS,MURRAY WANTS STAMKOS. They did not want to trade ALOT for him before this trade deadline. So if they know they can sign him with a trade, Pegula looks at it as a win. They would of given up a boat load this year in a trade. Next year is third year of rebuild they have to start winning. They know the fan base is getting tired of losing. Don't think they know it is Mausoleum in there. There is marketing and promoting they have to do. They are not selling out Imagine announcing the trade in buffalo at draft, I am telling you what has been said

I think we're in the mix
There's a lot of teams that just wouldn't be able to afford him bc of their cap
Others teams I think will make a run at him...

Toronto
Detroit
Philly
Montreal

Not sure who else...

- jdfitz77

Detroit can't, they simply don't have the cap room, and they have a few big names coming up that are due raises in Dekeyser, Sheahan, Mrazek and Pulkkinen. They'd have to let Helm go to sign Stamkos which is obviously a no brainer. Unless of course they make some major moves like being able to get rid of Howard, but Mrzek will eat up most, if not all of the space that Howard would vacate.

I don't Montreal could either. Maybe that's what the Pacioretty rumors are about, trying to make a little room, but he's only about 40% of what Stamkos' deal will be and they already have $64M locked up for next year.

Philly could definitely be a sleeper in this, they have the room, and have Gagner coming off the books after this year too which is another $3.2M. Really, they only need to sign Medvedev and Schenn. I think they could make a move or 2 and be right there.

I don't know what the Panthers' internal budget is, but they could definitely afford him, especially having Soupy's $7M coming off the books. As it stands right now they have ~$23M in cap space for next year. Obviously we don't know what the cap will do. Gudbranson is probably due a bit of a raise up from $2.5M. Trocheck will be getting probably a 3 year $9 or $10M deal so that'll takee up about $3M-ish per season. Jags if he decides to come back will probably be right around his current deal, Hudler and Purcell maybe re-sign one of them depending on how they perform during their rental period. I could see Florida making a big run at him.

The Sens and Ducks don't have the cash to do it. Nor do the Isles, Devils, Yotes, or Preds. I don't think the Jets do either, but I'm not sure of their budget.

Dallas could be intriguing, but Benn is due a massive raise of his own after next year, But I doubt they re-sign Hemsky after next year too. Nichushkin is up after this year, but apparently is on the outs with the front office.

Realistically I see about 5 teams that could sign him without massive roster overhaul:

You have the Leafs along with the Sabres that will move heaven and Earth. Then you have Philly and Florida. The Avs theoretically could, but they didn't want to pay ROR $7M there's no way they pay Stamkos somewhere north of $11M.

And last but not least they could come to some sort of agreement in Tampa which I still see as the most likely of all the scenarios.

I would trade for his rights, but not our 1st
- sbroads24

The only way it makes sense to trade for his rights is if we are worried he's gonna leverage a big offer from the Leafs to get more $$$ from us

FITZY,there you go.bingo. They don't look at him being a UFA,they look at it as we have to get him. If it means making a trade knowing they will sign him ,then they will. They think they are 91 a top 2 d man away and a few more incidental pieces away. They have said, they will not have another chance of landing a player like 91 unless it is drafting (which is a crapshoot and have they have to wait even longer, pegula wants to win now)or giving up a lot of assets. They know this is there chance

I believe what you are saying was said...it certainly makes sense given last years discussion at the draft.
My issue is Stamkos' value. Is he really worth $11-12m long term. That contract becomes a boat anchor in about 4 years...and assuming he signs for 7 years, wow "that is a lot of bread"..it impacts the team in a big big way, obviously. I remain skeptical that it is in the best interests of the Sabres to go all in on him.

I kinda thought it would be tough for Montreal or Detroit as well...
But they have been thrown out there by ppl "in the know"
I'm assuming there's a lot of teams that would make maneuvers so that they could fit him

Unless Tampa wins the Cup, I just don't see him going back
Seems like they're too far gone

Idk if we'll get him...
But the more I think about it, the more I like our chances

Especially if we pull off a trade for a good young defenseman at the draft

Stamkos would get 50-60 goals that itself should be worth 12 million... I remember people, wgr female doging over 4 years ago saying ov was done and no one would want to trade Thomas Vanek for him what happened then

I think in recent years a conditional 4th is offered up to talk to someone. If we signed him I wouldn't mind giving one up to be first in line.

There's a reason all the industry experts have come out & made comments about Stamkos not wanting to go to Toronto for various reasons

Idk if they got the info from Stamkos, or his agent, or if they're just putting 2 & 2 together based on things he's said...
But it does make a lot of sense to me that he would NOT want to go there
Actually...
Seems like the only reason he would is just bc it's his hometown

Picking in the top5 and then
Trading for a good young defenseman

I think that would be a pretty good "splash"

No reason to waste assets on a guy we can get for nothing
If it's a 3rd...
Ok, no prob

If it's Ennis, or a 1st in 2017, or anything significant like that...
No way
Doesn't make sense
