Slight overpayment on Raffl. But not crazy. I'd rather have him then sell low on him.
How often do third round picks become contributing roster players? 25% maybe

- PLindbergh31

I don't see it as an overpayment. He has some skill, grit, can play all 3 forward positions, has good possession numbers and can play special teams. It's a fair price

And he can play up and down the lineup, love that kind of versatility.

Exactly.
Someone made a comment that he doesn't understand how he gets that much more than Bellemare. Well, get back to me when Bellemare scores 10 goals in a season, let alone 20 and when Bellemare is able to contribute on a legit scoring line. Heck, I like PEB, but he is what he is, a solid 4th liner who can kill penalties. Raffl is a legit 3rd liner who can move up when needed. Apples and oranges.

That's the thing, though: You flat-out have to slot that properly. While there is value in the player -- and I like him -- teams can't overpay for what he brings.

It's a fair deal, the term is good. And hopefully very soon, he moves down and stabilizes the kind of third line you need to win

Every time I watch this Blackhawks team, I can't help but think back to the 2006-2007 season.

Blackhawks 71 point season turns into Patrick Kane and 3 Cups.
Flyers 56 point season has ultimately turned into Jordan Weal. Hard to comprehend.

The Chicago Black Hawks were bad a lot longer than this, which is why they have Toews and Kane.

I saw interviews with Magic and Jordan this week, they both conceded that Steph and the Warriors would have swept their best teams.

Amen. Guys like Raffl are underappreciated by the masses because he doesn't put up a ton of points despite being a top-9 guy. But he does all of the little things you mentioned on top of chipping in some goals when put in a top-6 role. Of course he's better slotted for the 3rd line, but being able to skate with guys like Claude and Jake when needed and not look out of place is not something Bellemare can do. And like you said, I like Bellemare and that's not an attempt to slight him.

Can't wait to see how many roster players the Rags give up to get E. Staal. I'm guessing at least 2 As well as taking on all of Staal's money.

I'm going to truly enjoy watching them not win the Cup this year, and I'll enjoy watching their window close over the next few years as they slowly sink to the bottom of the league. (frank) them.

Why are they adding, when there is going to be a 115-120 point team in the Eastern Conf?

When you say "people" like that, your argument loses a little -- I am only speaking for myself.

This is the first season where Schenn has shown the kind of consistency where I would even consider extending him. I worry about the dollars of a potential extension, but at least I can pretend that over the course of 82 games in seasons to come, he's going to be involved more consistently.

Just yesterday, I said I'd trade Raffl, for the reasons I've touched on today. You can't overpay non-elite players. You can't be afraid to trade them. If you're not tough enough to slot them properly, the worst thing you can do is extend them for an extra $250K here, and extra $375K there.

As I have repeatedly said, any player who is part of the solution -- not just filling a slot and putting up empty numbers -- is welcome, as far as I am concerned. But with a cap, you can't be scared to make tough decisions on non-elite players
