I hope not. Hextall didn't draft him, but he always talks very highly about Morin. I would rather lose our first for Drouin if it was lottery protected. It should be around 12th overall. - Feanor
Just not sure that would get it done. It really does suck to think about though...ideally we see a blueline of Myers, Sanheim, Ghost, Provorov, Morin, Hagg, but they arent all going to make it as Pros, most of them are left handed, some will probably have a tougher time breaking into the NHL than others.
It is a very dangerous situation. Hopefully it plays out like Nashville where we go, oh wow we have so many defensemen and not enough ice for them...lets trade one of them for a first liner |

In-season. But you're right, the 2 extra year at $3M+ would be tough. Only options I see are Raffl, Laughton, and Cousins. I don't think I'd do the first and either of Laughton or Cousins. - jmatchett383
I'd trade our first and cousins if thats all it took. |

Thats what I figured, but do you think Streit just came into the NHL as a leader or did he develop into one? - YuenglingJagr
Well, he was captain of the Swiss National team the year he came into the NHL, so I'm sure he was a leader to some extent when he came in.
Remember, he came into the NHL when he was 28. |

The same probably goes for Nikolai Zherdev. The same went for me. I'm not sure if that's comparable to professional international teams. |

There may be some pee wee teams that can beat the Swiss National Team though |

Flyers going to need to go on an "Ottawa like" run for the post season. That said I expect minimal activity at the TDL |

By the way, I remember Bill writing something about Hextall seeing Streit the same way I'm talking about. |

Doubtful. The Swiss program has come a long way in the past 15 years. |

Doesn't mean he's untouchable but, yes, they see value beyond on the ice. |

Most likely due to the leadership of Mark Streit |

Yeah, I mean you have to consider all options if something great is thrown your way. But, people throwing around Streit's name like he's an easy guy to just take off the team. Not untouchable by any means but I just think people are really undervaluing what he brings to the organization in this point in time. |

And the development of the Swiss National League, bringing in better coaches, and sport's popularity growing in the country. Also, the fact that players in other European countries (i.e. Raffl, Sbisa types) that don't have strong programs choosing to represent Switzerland internationally has bolstered their roster.
But yes, Mark Streit was probably a leader when he entered the NHL in his late 20s. |

I bet Ottawa is happy they only signed Hammond for 3 years and $4M. |

I have always liked Streit a lot. His signing has been the exact opposite of the Vinny debacle.
I just think if they get a great offer for him in the next three days, then this lineup would have enough veteran leadership next season:
MDZ-Ghost
Schultz-MacDonald
Provorov-Gudas |

If you could, would you move Schultz if you could resign Medvedev at his current salary? |

If a team came and offered a late first rounder I think you look at it really hard. Streit has been very good for this team both on and off the ice, but its about building for the next few years.....I hope I didn't sit through the last 2-3 years of this to go off plan now... |

No point re-signing Medvedev when the coach plays an AHL plug in front of him. If I were Meddy I'd be looking to go elsewhere, possibly to a team with a bunch of Russians.
But this would be a better looking lineup:
MDZ-Ghost
Provorov-Medvedev
Mac-Gudas |

You have to be careful though. Can't just build for the next few years without ensuring you have a steady bridge to get you there. |

Okay. Assuming you were coach and GM, and therefore able to make roster and lineup decisions, would you trade Schultz if you could resign Medvedev at his current contract? |

The same Swiss national team that's beaten NHL-player based Team Canada, Russia and USA teams in assorted major international games since 2006? The one that pretty routinely makes it to at least the medal round quarter finals? The same one that went all the way to the gold medal game undefeated in the entire tourney (til a final game loss) at the World Championships in 2013?
They're never the favorites but they can knock off anyone on given day because they skate well, play a very disciplined system and usually have good goaltending. If they can scratch out a goal or two and play from in front, they are no fun to play against. |
