I think a lot of the care for other peoples well being also comes in from the equipment of today. It's like the players are wearing a full set of plate armor as they play. Find a way to make the equipment safe for the player being hit by a pick but also soft enough so as not to be able to knock someone's brain onto the ice and I think we'd see a better game.

Very true, modern elbow pads are lethal weapons.
I just wish they'd stop targeting other player's heads, no one should have to go through what Keith Primeau has over the last 10 years.

Yes, and if the Rangers are up 10-0, their sole interests should be to try to destroy and hospitalize Giroux and Ghost, right? Because why hit if you're not gonna destroy someone? That's not gonna get you on the highlight reel.
- jmatchett383

Gudas didn't destroy the guy.

He didn't go out of his way to throw the hit.

Player had the puck.

The size of the players does help make the hit look worse. Gudas is 6'1'' 200 something. Buffalo player is 5'9'' 180 something. Those things do play into hits.

If it was a player of Bailey or Foligno's size the hit probably doesn't look the way it does.

so much for that Gudas hit being dirty and suspension worthy
- funmaster18

While apparently legal, I think most people would agree that he was skirting the line and that he needs to make some smarter decisions.
He's on my poop list right now.

And yes, I know that's terrifying for him.

I find it utterly ridiculous that Simmonds should have to answer to anything. He was attempting to throw a CLEAN check and McDonagh attempted to take his head off with a crosscheck to the head. I mean, he didn't just put his stick up to protect himself from a CLEAN check, he extended his arms. So Simmonds took jab at him...something that happens how many times a game? Does Glass have an issue at all with an extended crosscheck to the head? (frank) Glass
- nastyflyergirl

he doesn't have to, as you're right. glass if a (frank)ing (frank)tard, and so is mkdunuh. the spin on this is (frank)ing ridiculous. i've never seen such uproar from a gloved punch before, especially given what happened immediately beforehand, which prompted said punch. honestly, that douchebucket is the one who should have gotten the match and been suspended, but because NHL. yeah. of course. (frank)ing idiots.

but if glass does take him on, simmonds will stand up for himself, and likely pummel him.

Agree 100%

Hopefully they goad Glass into taking 2 and 10 and then put on in on the pp. Also, if the Rags want to take any runs at any of our star players, then CSP is fair game in my book.

Yes

I know that. I love capitalism. But I can still hate the inevitable tarting up of the jerseys that we will no doubt see.

I just don't like giving them a PP when we didn't have to. The Pk did really well last night, but it's as fragile as an egg.
- Feanor

And if that is the reason to avoid the hit, not taking the chance on getting a penalty, then I agree.

But people seem to think the reason not to hit the guy was because it was 5-1. Like the Flyers are supposed to stop playing hard as the Sabres continue to push.

It's because players simply have no respect for each other anymore. As "violent" as the 70's and early 80's were, players did not intentionally try and head shot each other. And if they did, they got their ass kicked and their teammates would often just stand and watch.

I guess if the league would start handing out real punishments to repeat offenders, such as full season suspensions, maybe this kind of crap would stop. However, the blame still lies 100% on the players.

Well, unfortunately I finally did see a clip of the Gudas hit so I won't be able to issue a blind opinion. My now informed opinion follows.

unnecessary hit? maybe. but I don't want a guy like that second guessing himself. play your game. So far he's been doing a good job at walking a VERY fine line. I wonder if it wasn't 5-1 with a couple minutes left in the game if he would have received a major penalty for that.

i would love that. since their boy krieder is so good at slide tackling goalies and injuring them. oh that's right...he just lost an edge driving the net...97 times.

Please, all Gudas does is try to throw the biggest hit he possible can. The point of a body check is to stop the player's forward progress and separate the puck from the carrier. Grossmann, when he could catch the player, was fantastic at this. Gudas thinks the point of a body check is to hit the player as hard/fast as you can, which often times leaves him out of position and unable to get possession of the puck. Trying to destroy people is all he tries to do on every shift.

Yeah right? Besides it's much more important that Pronger looms over Bettman during the draft lottery.

"Does that one say Philly Gary? No? Well then put it back and pick another one. Hey, don't make me tell you twice, little man."

Let's stop the conversations around running star players. I can't stand that talk for or against. Glass is an idiot and I stand with NFG that all this uproar is ridiculous considering the cross check to the head.

Yes, at the professional level one should not let the score determine the level of play.
