Just like with the Oilers, I'll have to see it to believe it. Right now they are one of the worst teams in hockey and actively getting worse. That's all I know for sure.

Have any of our posters said they would trade Shinkaruk?

I heard Ian MacIntire talking on the 1040 last night for about 5 minutes.

He had some interesting points. He doesn't believe GMs will be doing Derek Roy's for second trades anymore. GMs realize the value of ELCs that need to contribute to building a roster , so they will hold onto draft picks.

He doesn't believe Vrbata wants to be moved. His wife is due any week , he does not want to uproot his family. IM believes Vrbata will exercise his NTC and provide only a list , then it is up to JB to try and find a suitor from the list.

In other words don't expect a lot of change in the next few weeks. Benning said the same message a week ago.

I agree with macIntire. As I've been saying, we would be lucky to get a 3Rd and a 2nd for our two "prized" UFAs. People will be disappointed when nobody is moved

Pretty much, this current "win streak" and Edler/Sutter's demise doesn't help.
Frankly, i bet Benning holds firm, gambles with the teams chances of making the playoffs. Hammer is resigned and Vrb walks for nothing.

I really don't want Drouin.

Theodore has the potential to be a top pairing D-man but we have had such a small sample size of each Shinkaruk and Theodore to make a good judgement call on doing such a trade. I would love to let Shinkaruk develop more and see what we have. Great signs early on!

kinda sounds like our teams success......

Its taken 40 years, but the "Leaves" are finally rebuilding the right way. With the right people. Its early, but it sure looks like they know what they're doing. Vantel is right. Their future looks bright.

In other news, can't wait to the see the flying skate of spaghetti Saturday night!!

Don't kid yourself, the Leafs have had some pretty good picks in previous years but they either selected poorly or traded them away. It's not like they haven't had good picks before.

From 1981 to 1990 inclusive they drafted 6th, 3rd, 7th, 4th, 1st, 6th, 7th, 6th, 3rd & 10th overall.

Yeah, I think Vrbata only has to submit a list of 8 teams that he is willing to accept a trade to. Pretty easy to squash the ablility to trade him by submitting a list like:

TOR, MTL, CLB, BUF, WPG, CAL, EDM, or CAR

Was listening to Bill Watters on 1040, he suggested Vrbata to Chicago.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hamhuis stays, still unsure of him resigning though but I believe Vrbata will be asked for his list of teams and Benning will get what he can get. Vrbata's wife is expecting so he really doesn't want to go anywhere with a baby on the way.

I would if benning would get some interest from other teams before approaching vrbata... say he has some interest from Chicago/LA/whatever contender of a team, and then ask for the list of teams to try and persuade him to go to a winner instead of some middling playoff bubble team. Of course, this would need interest from a top flight team....

I realize that these guys are people and deserve to be treated as such but the window for a career in hockey is so short. What I am getting at its players need to suck it up. Sure you don't want to go anywhere but its professional sports and your traveling all the time anyhow. I travel a lot to provide my family the things that they wouldn't have otherwise and I miss out on a lot. Its a sacrifice. These guys really are not sacrificing that much being asked to move for a job that is only gonna last a few more years. Man up and move on.

I can understand Vrbata not moving. reality of the job. if he is uncooperative or doesn't report to his new club, it could cost him next season.

That's easy to say, and I have no problem with Benning asking players to waive their NTCs, but I also don't blame them at all for refusing. Take Hamhuis for example: he left money on the table to get that trade protection, and he's well within his right to excercise it. For a team that's legitimately competing for the cup it makes sense to do whatever you can to keep cap hits down, but for the position the Canucks are in right now I'd rather they overpay rather than offer trade protection.

I have no problem with either. A contract is a contract. I am just saying career is short imo I go with the flow.

I would to. If a team doesn't want you anymore, why would you want to stay. But while I'm going to be a dad any day now, I'm not one yet so I really don't know how I'll feel then.

hopefully short term overpayment.

when Lu's contract was negotiated, I liked the idea of trade windows and such where the club could ask him for a list of teams.

I wonder what it would take to land Pearson from LA. Constantly being healthy scratched. Hasn't been able to come back in the line up for a while. Has had big success with Vey in the A....

Well I work away a lot and it is tough but they always know that when I am home I am home. I think its tougher on me than it is on them as they have their routine with school and mom. Being a Dad is awesome. The first child is always tough because its all new and you think you don't know what you're doing but trust yourselves because you'll be fine. #2 is easy.
