I think Simmonds repeated attempts to get after McD on that play that culminated in the punch to the face made the decision for them.

Simmonds takes a late run at McD... then keeps going at him making McD to put up his stick to defend himself (sure its a cross check but hes trying to defend himself)... then Simmonds takes a slash at McD... and finishs it off with a cheap shot punch.

You want to tell me Simmonds isnt trying to take the Rangers best skater out of the game?

It was bad sequence for the refs and their was nothing close to a major let alone a match penalty or a McDonagh dive in it.
