I think that is false. Not only is he becoming a better passer with the man advantage...but he is often doing the dirty work with simmonds to screen the goalie and retrieve pucks. Might not show up on the score sheet, but it is just as important and is definitely "making-teammates-better" kind of stuff
- YuenglingJagr

Don't wanna come across as not giving Schenn any credit, but Jake's combined skill set and NZ/OZ dominance is close to being G's equal, and probably near the top of the league too. He's nigh irreplaceable to the Flyers, and that's why he's probably gonna be worth every penny of that deal.

Replace Schenn with a Andrew Shaw ($2M cap hit) or something and I'm not sure you'd see that much of a drop off at all.

It's playing against the field, just like track and field/swimming/skiing/Wing Bowl/etc.

In the field there are at least nine people actively trying to stop you from achieving your goals.

Looked liked a mis-timed hip check and he semi-turtled to avoid Lessio's stick/knees hitting him in the head. There wasn't any knee on knee contact either -- I don't really see any intent to injure there.

(unlike that Marchand hit)

- Tomahawk

Said this last night.

Thought he lined the hip check up, but he wasn't lined up.

Stupidly got into a drunken argument with the bartender over whether golf was a sport which quickly was joined by several regular patrons.

As a new golfer last summer, I'd vote golf is a sport based on the time, dedication, practice, and frustration involved to actually become good.

So chess is a sport then?

In order for it to be a sport there must be defense. That is my criteria.
- MBFlyerfan

That's generally my rule of thumb, too. It breaks down on auto racing which some think is a sport, but I don't.

There's more defensive maneuvering in a chess match than most physical sports too, lol.

Many people take offense when their particular "athletic competition" or "game" is not deemed a sport (skiing, golf, swimming, etc) and then proceed to argue about its "difficulty" or "skill level" involved....and take the false logical leap that somehow the person is saying it is not as difficult. Difficulty level has nothing to do with it. Nor does the skill required to do it well.

- MBFlyerfan

Would you consider loading up the breast stroke event with your 3 best swimmers because you know the other team only has one good breast stroker 'defense'? There are tactics involved in swimming that aren't necessarily offense or defense but it's not as simple as beating your time or your opponent. There is a team aspect to it that extends past relay events. I'm not defending swimming as a sport or whatever but it's hardly a one person competition.

I guess you have never played baseball.

- MBFlyerfan

Sure have. You stand there. A lot. Every now and then you have to move a few steps one way or the other and maybe throw or catch a ball. When you're not busy standing in the field, you need to get up and swing a bat maybe 3-4 times once every 9 batters, and if you get on base, you have to run a maximum of 360 feet, usually taking breaks at 90 foot intervals.

The exception is the pitcher.

See, to me a sport is an athletic competition with an objective scoring metric. So track and field is a sport (you won the race by X seconds, you won the jump by X inches, etc.), but figure skating is not.

Under my model, golf qualifies. Whether it's a very sporty sport is another debate.

Both require swinging a stick, but golf does not require running to your next station afterwords
- BulliesPhan87

No, it involves walking large distances compared to standing around in a field for 90% of the time that you're not batting one out of 9 times. That's way more physical exertion.

Also, you run to your next station (or, in some cases, slowly jog) about 3 out of 10 times if you're good, and you usually take breaks after running 90 feet.

In track/racing/etc., every other person in the race is actively trying to stop you from achieving your goals, assuming your goal is to be the fastest/best.

Sure there is (technically). You have to move your arms. It is a game that stresses your body mentally, and you have to cunningly strategize to win, including play defense.

I agree that it's not a sport, but not because there's "no athletic activity."

No, they're trying to be better than you. That's not true defense. Their trying has no direct effect on your ability to succeed.
