And your opinion is pure poop!!

Just kidding (obviously)

Thought I'd start looking and found this gem:

Ondrej Palat: 2011 7th round, pick 208 overall (only 3 players taken after him in the entire draft). 199 GP, 45/94 139 points

not too shabby. They're just going to be super rare. I started looking in 2012, figure a few years back to give players some time to develop. So far I've only found him and Shaw (Hawks) as regular NHLers.

Looking at Round 5 and later, those 2 mentioned, and just found 3 more in 2010 (Brendan Gallagher, John Klingberg and Mark Stone (Stone drafted by Ottawa - was Murray key??? hmmmm

These players aren't gonna wow you as 1st line studs, but still above average NHLers found late.

Really? Delusional? It's only crappy players drafted late like Jamie Benn in the 5th, Palat in the 7th, Pavelski in the 7th, or goalies like Rinne and Lundqvist in the 7th.

Would you look at that? There's another future HOF player drafted in the 7th, and that was after Zetterberg and Datsyuk, too. And there's an Art Ross winner in there as well.

It doesn't have to be a HOF player to make a difference. It's certainly uncommon, but GMs can still find quality NHL players that will make significant contributions to their team in the later rounds.

- JetpackJesus

Ya delusional. Zetterberg and Datsyuk were mentioned in the post as comparables so the Hall of Fame is easily entered into the conversation. If you were talking about the Stone's and Palat's of the league I'd agree but your mentioning future hall of famers. You do realize nowadays in scouting terms means at latest 2010-present? There's a HUGE difference with scouting from the early 2000's then to 2010+. Would you look at that there are no stars from that point on...

Your mentioning goalies like they are somehow related to the forwards that were mentioned in the original post. Of course you can find a top end goalie in the later rounds because that's where they are taken . Few GM's relinquish a 1st rounder on a prospect goalie.

But you have your opinion I have mine

Gaudreau is a good one but he's 4th rounder. Talking about 5th round plus. Always a good chance you'll get something there in a deep draft. Byfuglien and Benn are both pre 2010 so that doesn't surprise me.

SELLERS,,

HANDS DOWN...

The Sabres are still rebuilding. They still need scoring (Mostly on the wing) and defense. There is no better way to get that then the draft; especially for a young team like ours. We do not need anymore mistake contracts. Tkachuck, Laine, Puljujarvi, Chychrun and Matthews would be huge for the Sabres.

Players to get rid of hopefully by deadline....

Ennis
Moulson
Weber
Johnson
McGinn
Gorges
Legwand
Franson
Foligno

- Jammerz04

McGinn & Weber will prob grab interest & get us an ok return
Maybe a 2nd & 3rd respectively
With Vasilevskiy struggling, maybe a team like Tampa could part with a 2nd for Johnson, but that might be expecting too much
I don't think Legwand has much value, late pick at best

Selling on Ennis now seems like a bad idea bc his value has to be low
Foligno on his own prob doesn't get us much back, so unless he's part of a package for something good i'd keep him

With years left on their contracts, idk what we could get for Georges or Franson, prob not too much

Tough to imagine anyone trading for Moulson

Although I am in agreement with this, there is no way players like Gionta, Moulson and maybe Gorges get moved. Murray wanted experienced NHL players in here, dont see that changing overnight.

I agree for a video game it is a fine move, but not really in this scenario, due to the way Murray wanted to build the team.

No to mention, very few teams would take those players (I bet Gorges has most value of those players)

- Lilroot9

Gionta won't go. He's our captain. Plus he sucks.

Moulson has no chance of moving unless it's bad contract for bad contract.

Gorges has a very good chance to be moved. Top 4 defensive defenseman are always high in demand for the playoffs. He's got two years left at 3.9 mill which is really reasonable. Tonnes of teams would take him.

Goalies aren't always late bloomers though. Fleury was a #1 pick. Price was a 5th overall pick. It's not as black and white.

And last I checked, goalies were players too.

- HonkFortheGoose

Funny...

I obviously meant MOST goalies. Didn't know I had to spell everything out for. You could put two in two together.

If you put two IN two, you actually get 1. Just simple match.

Two AND two equals 4.

No matter what way you slice it, using him to point out that you feel the All Star game is a joke, is making him a joke as well. If you don't understand that, then there's a lot of learning you have to do still.

Were your intentions necessarily bad? No. But the hurt he had to go through when the league asked him not to participate and all of that is very real and that's the part that I have a problem with. He's a real guy, with a real family, and real emotions. How would you like to be the person in that position? It's not a good place to be.

- HonkFortheGoose

I think as a general rule people don't think of athletes as people with feelings. All they see is a stat line and whether they "suck" or not; regardless of what kind of person they are away from the field.

Ennis has barely played this year, and his value is at an all time low, not a good time to trade.

Weber, Legwand, and Johnson will not net anything more than a couple of 5ths.

Gorges has too much term for a team to acquire at the deadline.

I don't see them moving either of Foligno or Franson.

Which really only leaves McGinn, and if we're lucky we get a 2nd, but we most likely get a 3rd.

- Mentalorgasm5

Too bad Kane barely played last two seasons and reached 20 goals all but once and had huge off ice drama with players, coaches and management; his value sure went into the crapper huh? Ennis 3X 20 goal scorer...

Gorges has too much term? Lol since when is two seasons at $3.9 million too much contract for a playoff team in need of a defensive defenseman?

McGinn can easily net us a 2nd rounder.

Weber can land a 3rd from any team in search of a depth defenseman for the playoffs or for a late playoff push.

Foligno has a good chance to be moved there were "Big expectations" this season for him in Murray's book and he's failed. We also have a lot of contracts. I think he's gone. Not for much.

Good chance for Franson as well. Hasn't worked out well here and he's playing on our bottom pairing most nights.

I hope Weber isn't moved but I can see a team firmly in the playoffs wanting his services for a playoff push to be a solid 3rd paring, penalty killing dman.
I'd love to see Weber signed in the off season to a 3 year, 4 and one half million dollar contract.

- BuffaloHardHat

He'd be good to keep around for a few more years as a 3rd pairing 7th defenseman. But I still think he can garner a 2nd(essentially a 3rd) from a team that has injuries or injury concerns to their defense. Teams can't expect to do what Chicago did last year and play 4 defense throughout the whole playoffs with one guy playing 34 minutes a night. Chicago themselves couldn't do it again. I said it a week or so ago would you trade a 2nd round pick for Mike Weber in 05-06 knowing that the only reason you lost that series against Carolina is because you had Nathan Paetsch, Doug Janik, Jeff Jillson and Rory Fitzpatrick playing in place of Jay McKee and Henrik Tallinder? We had 2 NHL defensemen in that game 7. Brian Campbell and Toni Lydman. Tell me you wouldn't rather have Mike Weber for the last pick in the 2nd round than any of the 4 I mentioned?

That's the thing players LIKE let me say that again players LIKE Zetterberg and Datsyuk will not be found in those late rounds again. Palats and Stones may pop up but future hall of famers? Umm no.

A third rounder id gladly take. Id help him pack for a 2nd rounder.

I also dont think a 3 year deal for 4.5 mil gets it done. That would have him taking a paycut, if he gets traded to a contender and plays some meaningful minutes no way he takes a paycut.

Some people also forget that an NHL franchise can only carry a finite set of contracts, so at some point, many, many picks serve no purpose.
- Der Kaiser

U can draft Euros, NCAA players & high school players who plan to go to college and u have a longer time before u have to sign them
So u can let them develop longer than guys from Canadian Juniors

Maybe that enables u to hit on a couple late round picks

Seems a good portion of the guys that are successful from lower rounds are Euro players
And there's always a handful of good NCAA players who don't get drafted for whatever reason
Maybe having those extra picks helps us find some of these guys?
