You are correct, he wasn't drafted until after his freshman season. During his sophomore season, he got selected for Team USA for the WJC and Union won the ECAC championship. That's when people started to notice him.

Makes it even more amazing Ghost didn't get drafted his first year through.

Look at Ondrej Palat -- a simply terrific young 2 way player. He was overlooked at age 18, 19, and got drafted 7th round at 20. A lot of scouts thought he was just an overager riding the coattails of his stud linemate....Sean Couturier. I enjoy stories like these.

Did you just copy this from a post you made about Ghost two years ago to save time?

No. I always was a big fan of Gostisbehere. It was easy. I didn't see him nearly as much as Sanheim.

I don't think he's a long shot but I don't consider him a blue chip prospect either

Also, anyone else in Atlantic County NJ feeling a bunch of tremors?

In 2011, he was just some overachiever in prep school. Once he had to play against guys in their 20s in the NCAA, he wouldn't be able to hold up.

I don't like that the Flyers scouts must have seen him play a ton and didn't even use a 6th rounder on him.

It's truly amazing how public opinion has shifted on Sanheim from last year. His year plus season he continued on his late season success, and everyone thought he could be a legit #1 -- we were all excited, and thought our d corps was set even before we got presumptive future #1 Provorov. Sanheim just missed the WJC roster...and they took few if any 19 yo d men, so it was no slight. Through the summer and into the fall, everyone thought he'd be a lock to be a top pairing d man for them. We saw how that went. Between the WJC, his defensive struggles this year, mismanaged development by his coaches...his stock is still high, but (some) people are less optimistic.

But if you blow late round picks on guys like Ghost, how are you gonna get your superstars like Zac Rinaldo and Derek Mathers?

I haven't seen him play more than a handful of times, but there are a few people on here who seem to liken his defensive game to that of Nik Zherdev.

Agreed. I understand now he was 20 and lasted until the 7th round, and hindsight is a female dog with him...no one on any team 30x over predicted he'd be what he is or he'd have gone top of the first round at age 18. But they drafted Coots that year, God knows how much video and scouting went into him where they saw Palat every shift next to him. They erred, but probably thought he was just benefiting from playing next to him as a 20 year old.

Oh it's more than that. Before he was drafted there were lots of comments on this blog that 17th was too high to select a defensive defensemen without a lot of offensive upside. Basing opinions solely on point totals is rarely a good idea.

Have seen very little of him.

If I had any fear it's that he is too soft.

I like my junior d men to score bc their numbers will only get worse. Even def d men in the NHL usually had good numbers. Sanheim put up a huge 2nd half but that was also bc of usage. He just wasn't playing before. So his season numbers looked worse than they are. Look at Myers now...last season he was low on the roster and wasn't used.

But point taken. I would've preferred he'd have less points and better all around play this year. Calgary coaches are doing a number on him.

Gostisbehere is obviously a dynamic player, who's made some big plays this season. Last night though, despite the one mistake he made, may have been his most impressive game yet. He saw significant icetime against the Caps top lines and top players, and really played well.
