I supported the deal at the time thinking other moves would be made besides Vanek. After the trade, I was very surprised with everyone saying Vanek had his heart set on Minny. I'm not sure I would have made the deal if I knew Vanek had his heart set on Minny? I would have rather made a coaching change and try to move Moulson for a goalie.

End of the day you can't make that deal unless you can sign him
He gambled and lost. He's done some good things but this was a dumb thing to do.

Different magnitudes of sucking, though. Vanek has become an overpaid middle six forward who actually has been better this year than last year. Moulson might be the worst player in the NHL at this point since he is a one-dimensional finisher who has 4 goals in 49 games and zero goals in about 35 games.
- Snowblind

Moulson = 5 mil per year of suck

Vanek = 6.5 mil per year not as bad suck

We definitely agree on this

It was just a strange move that there were other issues besides Vanek and Vanek was not the last piece to the puzzle. The talk on the board was that other moves had to be coming and Garth was not going to let the season fall apart after making this move.

I have a close friend that works around the team and he told me it was a bad infection. I am not saying I agree or believe him but I guess it could be. Some of those crazy infections are nasty and take months to heal.

To be fair, I thought more moves were coming as well. Only thing that made sense. Isles made the playoffs the year before and Garth did little in the offseason so I thought the Vanek move signaled a change in plans. Boy was I wrong.

I get that ses111 but even if he made addition trades aquisitions he gave up a lot for a guy who was a 1/2 year rental with no gaurentee he was staying. I guess when Garth was trying to get something back for him at the dead line for some reason the other GMs weren't giving up anything worth while because it was known he was signing in Mn.

No question nyisles7 it was a huge risk. I think I was so caught up in Garth being aggressive and making a move. If I knew before how much Vanek wanted Minny I would have voted against the deal.

I wouldn't mind him going all in on a rental like Ladd, Staal or even a Hartnell with term this year as I think the team is closer to really competing in the real season but I think he needs a depth dman too.

There's less than a zero % chance of it happening. Maybe even less than less than a zero % chance.

Didn't we already learn the lesson with Vanek? This team is NOT "one" player away from making a cup run. Any UFA Rental will be a waste of assets. Also, Halak has been on & out of the lineup all season and so his durability is a question mark for a long playoff run. Greiss has been good but not that good and goalies are often the difference makers in the playoffs—which would kinda answer the question of why we still have Berube. I hope Garth doesn't decide to get desperate and give up someone promising in a hail mary attempt at keeping his job.

It would have to be a Spinal Meningitis/Mono type thing to call his season over.
Whatever "infection" might have occurred from the skate cut between Thursday night and Sunday afternoon games would be treatable with a strong cycle of antibiotics and wouldn't sideline a player for months. I got challenged during a game by a 19-yr old with braces last year—popped him in the mouth, broke his tooth and my knuckle got infected from the bacteria in the braces. It took 5-6 days for the infection to get to the point where I realized I needed antibiotics—and I waited until after I got home that night to clean the cut properly—Pelech was attended to immediately during the game and probably after as well. Whatever it is he has, an infection would not have taken "days" of testing to diagnose. I mean, I hope it IS something as simple as that but when the team said "they don't know" it has to be something out of the ordinary.

I'm going to have to disagree and say our goalies have been the mvp's of the first half. They have been a huge difference in our goals against and the PK. Nelson and Franz would be tied for second imho.
Eventually we are going to have to trade some of our young assets and picks for pieces that we need. All of our ptospects aren't going to be Islanders. The team is at a level where some will be utilized to obtain the final pieces that are needed to make a run and maybe some will become one of those pieces themselves but again, not all of them will be Islanders.

"If the core does stay together, the Islanders likely will make the playoffs. Depending on matchups, they would have a chance to win a postseason series for the first time since 1993."

Im not really sure what thats based on being that the title of the article was how inconsistent the team has been. Seems like thats more of a hope than an actuality. I feel as if Snow is trying to sign both KO and Frans otherwise, he's playing a very dangerous game of cat and mouse. We saw what happened when he waited too long with Vanek. I sure hope the isles dont get stuck in another situation when a Colberg is the return.

I'd love to get players back for Frans and KO to help for the playoffs, but it will be real difficult. Most likely would be draft picks back. Maybe you get a #1 back which you use for Ladd or Staal, but it still leaves you short at forward losing KO.

I just dont see Snow trading two core roster players for picks at this point in the game. Thats what rebuilding teams do........and this team is supposed to be passed the rebuild (even though i dont agree).

It will be an interesting 4 weeks thats for sure. At some point some team is gonna start pulling the trigger to get ready for the playoffs. It will be interesting to see what snow does to address the teams needs, and or with KO and Frans. If history has any indication, he's gonna try and resign both and not make any moves.

I understand Garth wanting to hold onto both for the playoffs. I would hate to re-sign both because that blocks two spots that can be used to bring in other players.

I really would like to see Frans re signed......I think he adds a lot of intangibles to this team. KO while not a first line player, is a good piece to any team, i just dont think he's worth top line money. It will be interesting because i think a cup team is gonna try and snatch him up and im hoping the isles can get something of value in return (not picks).
