AS is great for baseball; not as good for hockey/football/basketball because there are far more moving parts and inter-dependencies. AS is a fine tool to supplement analysis of those players, but should not replace or even out-weigh the good old-fashioned analysis.

Can't get much better than fancy stats AND the eye test. That's going to give you 95% of the entire picture.

1) Stats seems to be working just fine in the NBA,

2) Nobody has ever talked about stats replacing/out-weighing eyeballs -- can we please stop repeating that fallacy?

“There’s room in the game for analytics,” Peters said. “Are you ever going to base your lineup solely on the data? I don’t think so. But it provokes good thought and conversation.”

“We are playing well right now,” Pesce added. “We’re in the playoff hunt, and we’ve got a good Corsi. I guess the two relate to each other.”

Corsi is a result, not a process; it's a byproduct of a multitude of things. It's a red flag or a thumbs up, not an explanation. The other stats are what help explain along with the eye. Babcock goes to the Leafs and their star players have their possession stats SOAR using a worse roster. Babcock isn't a magician (he kinda is actually, but no spells or dragons are involved); Babcock knows good hockey and runs a phenomenal system. Good hockey by the eye = good Corsi.

I once dated a girl who went to the Catherine Gibbs school. I guess some of her skills transferred to me.

Sure. And the NFL and NHL, too. All I said was they're less useful in those sports than baseball.

Sure, as soon as folks stop throwing out one #fancystat on one player from one game and uses it as proof that he sucks.

seriously what?
- 2Real

you are going to compare the constributions Giroux brings to the team opposed to White? I think I can live with the occassional bad penalty from Giroux over the more occassional bad penalties from White.

You mean teams wouldn't just shoot like 1000 pucks on net from the blueline to win the yearly contest for best Corsi?

so if we're tied and giroux takes a retaliatory slashing penalty and the other team scores he gets a free pass because he's a "star"

As long as both teams and refs are there, it will be played. Remember the game in NJ when the trains weren't even running and the turnpike was closed but they played (I had tix for that in the Ice Lounge, which we had to eat). They had about 3000 people there (I think from PATH).

I'd expect Islanders will treat like road game and have all the guys in a hotel tonight. And Flyers will be there tonight. So...
