Trade him to Columbus and let Torterella tune him up.

They don't have a 1st this year and I doubt they would give another up at this point, especially for Hansen.

Would love to get Skjei but I think we would need to add.

- belcherbd

I dont know much about skjei but if he has top pairing potential thats the type of deal I make.

Anyone else notice Mike Zalewski recalled from Utica?!?!?

Don't want him to get hurt playing a meaningless game.

Gotcha.

So, if we assume he is ready to play pro next year and he goes to AHL...

Then the following year, Miller will be gone.

Would you theoretically:

a. go with a young tandem of Marky/Demko
b. Trade Marky and hire a Vet to mentor Demko
c. Hire a vet to play with Marky and keep Demko in the minors to marinate

- dbot

Martkstrom and Demko would have you set for the next 10 years in net more than likely.

* Larger spectrum of ages between players (about 6 or 7 years), and the fact that there are many physically mature 20-something-year-old players. Players think this as an important developmental benefit.
* Better strength and conditioning coaches and better off-ice facilities
* Around 35% of players come from the NCAA
* Do you think Toews and Kessel would have gone the NCAA route if it hurt their development?
* if you are 20 and not going anywhere in the CHL you are essentially screwed, compared to: you can keep on going in the NCAA right past 20 and right up 23.

- classic321

Toews and Kane ? Point to stars ...ok can you tell me what percentage of players from NCAA hockey that ever go pro? It's not a very big number...how about the same question for the CHL? It's a considerably bigger number no? Players that graduate the CHL and move on to the American hockey league at age 20 are also playing men...playing considerably more games and have full hands on development from their draft team. College kids don't get that. Pro sports teams have to keep hands off. And the kids that go the CHL route and no farther aren't poop out of luck. They earn most if not all there tuition for college while playing jr hockey. But yeah it's not about the education right ?

Great way to improve our depth on D. He would probably be the type to push for a top 4 roll next year which is exactly what we need.

not a chance he stays in college next year. If he stays he only plays a max of 35 games and that can only hurt his development at this point. He needs to play in the AHL and get up to 55+ games played
- Mungo

Demko will also be a UFA next year If he stays in college

Skjei projects to be a first to second pairing defenseman in the NHL.

It's a big hole. Similar to kids defecting from Cuba and not having to enter the MLB draft, they shouldn't be able to cricumvent the draft like that.

Yeah, they don't make all their tuition playing in CHL. NCAA is definetly got its perks, but claiming that the coaching and facilities are better is a stretch. They've been trying to poach our training staff/coaches for years. These CHL franchises have pretty excellent facilities, and often train at nearby colleges and universities too. NCAA has great facilities depending on the school. I think the Austin Matthews route looks pretty good. Get paid, play with men and be able to go straight into the AHL or NHL and get some life experience living in Europe.

Austin Matthews didn't go the college route because he didn't finish the necessary courses to be eligible. He fell really far behind living in detroit playing the USHL route.

He would have to do a crazy work load in the summer to become eligible.

And yes the facilities depend on schools

I played NCAA division 1. and the facilities compared the CHL are night and day for some teams.
Teams like the London knights and other popular teams have great facilities others have garbage facilities depending on the wealth of the owners and the city.

The thing about canadian university facilities is they don't offer scholarships so the gyms would be pretty standard. NCAA gyms have a minimum standard to be ruled a division 1 school.
