I'd really like to extend Mcginn. It's time to start the "build" part of our rebuild and I could see him being a good piece moving forward.

But if he isn't extended before the trade deadline, trade him 100%.

the only thing that makes me lean a different direction, is foligno is playing really well recently

and doesn't have a wonky back

There's a major difference between the two. McGinn actually has offensive ability

I agree he has been playing well, but he needs to bring more on the scoresheet if he's going to fill at role. He's still producing at a 4th line pace.

Foligno is on pace for 17 points this year, not great production. We need more out of him Mcginn or no Mcginn.

they sucked in the third

coaching?
conditioning?

I thought when they killed the double minor they would win

- homiedclown

I'd say conditioning plus being a mile above sea-level. They haven't skated like that in a game in a while. It was only in the last half of the third it started to really show. And for people who say the altitude isn't an excuse; Ryan Clark formerly of the Steelers wasn't allowed to play in Denver because he has Sickle Cell. And it's hard enough at sea-level to push enough oxygen to areas it's needed, but at higher altitude there's less oxygen per red blood cell. Athletes, especially cyclists and distance runners train at high altitude to improve RBC count to make up for lost oxygen per cell so that when they return to lower elevations they have more RBCs carrying more oxygen meaning increased endurance. It's all very complicated, including partial pressures and Ideal Gas Law. In the end, athletes who aren't used to higher elevations are at a distinct disadvantage than those that are. Having said that they could've tried a little harder to slow the game down, and maybe get a little luckier off of a double deflection and we'd be leaving with at least a point, but that didn't happen and they lost a very close game.

I don't care about potential. If a player like McGinn is all ready on your roster and you just traded for him, giving him up would be a weak move IMO. Especially if they plan on letting go Mouson and possibly Gionta next season. Having a guy that wouldn't cost as much as it would be to overpay some one year wonder from another team this off season to fill McGinn's role

he said that last year though and turned down an offer for Meszaros, or so I heard
- homiedclown

No one signed him in the off season after Murray let him walk, so I fail to believe that. But I also have no idea. It was Meszaros. So may be the missed opportunity was like, an 87th rounder or something.
Basically, what he's probably saying is that his UFA's are available to the highest bidder.
If no one bids on them, they go play in Europe.

especially with the cap being an unknown right now, he could be leaving money on the table by signing too early. I think if he isn't traded he could easily be resigned closer to the draft once he talks to other teams

But thats the risk, letting him walk for nothing if he gets to UFA, I think he at least talks to other teams during the courting period. Guy could really haul in a nice chunk of change if he plays his cards right

- DDM-Coga

At that point I see them getting like a 4th just trading his rights to a team that wants to take first crack at him if the Sabres can't re-sign him.

The highest I'd give Mcginn is 4 mil for 3/4 years. But I don't think he'd get more than that on the open market.

Yeah, but you have a guy in McGinn who has proven he can be a legitimate offensive threat, past and present. And as much as I'd like to see Foligno stick around for a while, he just doesn't bring what McGinn does and likely never will.

I think if you put McGinn on any third line, you get exactly Foligno.
Sell high.

Speaking of extensions I really hope they're talking to Risto. I'd go 8 years $42 million, maybe backload it a bit.

I'd hate to see him hit a "Meyers slump" but I don't get the feeling he will.

I don't either. Myers started off fast and then fell off a cliff. Risto has been improving the whole way, granted he shot up like a rocket this year, but still, different career arcs.

so the extension talks failed

- homiedclown

This is going to be his last big contract so I don't think he is going to negotiate against himself. He and his agent will want as much leverage as possible, or should, and be an UFA and see what he gets.

Good game tonight everyone. Being from Buffalo the win was bittersweet. I thought Lehner played well but Holden really should have buried that scramble play. Don't know how you miss the whole frame from that close. It was nice seeing ROR and McGinn back in action, I held my breath every time O'Reilly was on the ice. I was really hoping Grigo would hammer home that slapper too. I thought Zads played well tonight, munching the minutes with Beauchemin. Would have rather you sent us Risto though

F'ing pathetic! Now we have one more game against Detroit and have to sit with this loss for a week plus...
- bluengold12

There are games on Monday and Tuesday too.

But after that there's a week off

There's really not much we can unload... Gionta and Moulson who are the only players that should be moved have impossible restrictions on their deals...

Weber? Johnson? Gorges? Won't get much for those.
Ennis? Maybe if he comes back from injury soon and plays well.

Anyone else shouldn't be traded.

- bluengold12

Gionta plays a quality role on this team, has term left and a NTC. So why are we trying to get rid of him? He actually does his job very well.

Moulson on the other hand has been useless this season. But trading him would prove to be quite difficult.

Here's a quick glance at what players actually get paid.

Rick Westhead ‏@rwesthead 18m18 minutes ago
Escrow of 22% means an NHL player making $5M loses $1.1M off top. After taxes, agent fees, take-home of about $1.9M.

Sounds like the lottery in NYS.
