salary combined with low skills.
The Calgary Phaneuf used to be a physical presence, and his shot was a threat on PP.
The Toronto Phaneuf was the reason why Leafs lost game 7 vs Bruins. The guy can't skate, clear the net, has no proper d-zone exit, and does not contribute positively to PP or offensive output in general.
(I could add as well that he's top5 in unlikeable players/personalities in the league, but since that's subjective let's not go into that discussion (he's in the Marchand, Zac Rinaldo, Burrows, Sean Avery category)). - MaximusAurelius
He's the dman with the most points on our team. Also looks like he's a decent leader and positive for the young guys (Rielly). And I don't find him that unlikable at all. In fact, I like him. |

Ok
Dion is the reason we lost game 7? Not the moron coach that changed tactics (to one that didn't suit the leafs and played right into the bruins)?

To be honest, I don't love any of these deals for the Leafs.
Phaneuf Deal - probably the best return & most realistic, but seriously, good luck moving his contract & Babs likes him a lot - I think he stays.
Bernier Deal - why would we take back dead-weight like Hiller and settle for the 'rights' of a college kid who's going to UFA as it is? I think he could fetch us a second + B Prospect, or even a lower-end A prospect, as there are a few teams out there who might take a chance on a guy like Bernier (i.e. Islanders).
Lupul Deal - Makes no sense - just b/c we did it with Horton doesn't mean we should keep doing it. Lupul isn't the worst guy to have in the locker room for some of the younger guys, and his cap hit drops next year. If anything, I say a 2nd-rounder, maybe a 3rd + B prospect
Winnik Deal - Again, it makes no sense to take on Bickell - we don't need another project to worry about. Winnik fetched us a second last year, maybe the same will happen this year, or keep the guy - we need to retain a few hard-working role models for the youth movement. We need picks, not washed up players!
Komarov Deal - If it's a first rounder outside of the top 20, I would say absolutely not. Leo is gold. So it's either a solid #1 pick (15-20 range), or a higher #1 pick (25-30 range) + a quality prospect. If not - keep the guy - he's good for the team and has a poop load of character. Plus he's our top point producer this year! |

If a good deal for kadri comes along, trade him too.
He simply wont be worth the money he'll want.
Plus we already have a cheaper 50 pt 2nd line center |

It was horrible coaching. Dion should have been OFF the ice, he was exhausted and hurt & we needed a timeout. Any armchair coach watching that game saw that we needed to do that - I completely blame Carlyle for not managing his bench well...it was a gong-show. |

I used to believe that, but I hear a lot about the guy and he's been a good influence on people around him. I've never heard anything bad about the guy in the media ever on a personal level.
CGY Phanuef was 10 years younger without years of battles, when the league was structured for the big hits and whatnot.

I was screaming for a time out. The team was looking in shock and needed a break/motivational speech. Terrible play by the coach, I would have fired him then. |

Trade categories:
Guys they won't trade at all - just Rielly
Guys they like and would require BIG return - JVR, Kadri, Dion,
Guys they like but would trade - Leo, Gardiner, Hunwick
Everyone else - Canada Cup
Not bad ... except not even Rielly is untouchable.

Except the (frank)er draws about 3 penalties a game, that's worth its weight in gold. Id keep him now, gets shots and plays ok D but drawing the penalties is the best part. NHL games are won with the PP. IMO |
