Every contract is based on past performance. No GM (ok, maybe Kevin Lowe) has paid their player based on what they hope to accomplish.

It is until a certain age when the expectation is they will decline in performance. Most contracts dive in the back end to lower the cap hit. Thats why I think Kopitar getting $12-14 million in the first few years is expected, but a $10m cap hit at age 35 and 36 will be tough to swallow for a player of his style. People are complaining about the Sedin's being a combined $14m at 35 but at least they can still play their same way.

And no, the Kings were stuck, they have to pay him. Its just going to be tough in 6 or 7 years for them is all

My Q for the day....

Do the Canucks trade for Drouin?
What is offered?
Who would he play with?

The real Q is if Drouin is really a future star?
I say no.
Idk but he was not my pick when TB passed on Jones.
As for me i say don't trade for him.

Way to early to pin a star / not a star on this kid. I'd offer up Edler for him , a second and take a bad contract back. Just cause I want Edler off this team. Dorky May or may not fly. I'd stick it out to see. But no young assets going to Tampa bay IMO.

Does Kopitar's deal eliminate the resigning of Lucic?

The way the CBA works insures that players at 27/28 are going to get "paid". The only reason Kopitar is getting paid for so long is because he is at the top of the game, among the very best players in the world. Andrew Ladd isn't going to get $10m per, or 7/8 years.

I would say so, unless he takes a healthy cut to stay.

We don't need LUcic . We have the Sedins who have been booming it up.

Don't need him. Would be an anchor of a contract, yet I fully expect he's in our jersey next fall.

I am not saying that it in turn causes us to sign him or anything. I am just wondering if Lombardi will still be reaching out to the Lucic camp to resign like he did a few months ago.

5 years from now Kings will have ~32M tied up in a 33 YO Kopitar, 36 YO Carter, 36 YO Dustin Brown, 35 YO Jon Quick, 39 YO Marian Gaborik.

Kings said they are going to aggressively try to sign Lucic regardless of other Contracts...
