I'd take the opposite approach. 4 divisions, no conferences. We play the divisions a lot more than we do now, 6-8 times a year for each team in the division. The top 4 from each division get in, and you have 2 divisional rounds. Then round 3 the teams are reseeded and then the cup final between the remaining 2. In theory you could have a Rangers v Sabres final (just an example) but I think that's fine.

I think signing leino to a league minimum deal and having him work his way up would revive his career and could help the sabres cup chances a few years down the road.
