I think that at this point whereever you draft you take the best guy on your board. If youre in the top five focus more on the best player than position

I will say, I'm surprised they're worth that much. Sabres were 100% sold to Pegula in 2011 for 165 Million. I know the NHL has been making money and that big TV contract helped, but now the Sabres are worth 300M. Nearly doubled their worth in 5 years.
- Zschalberg

Think of what the Bills will be worth in 5 years and that sport is useless as far as I'm concerned.

Arizona is in a much larger market. That plays a key role. The Sabres are pretty much maxed out as far as customer reach is concerned. Arizona is nowhere close.

On a related note, the SiriusXM NHL channel did a little spot that Florida's attendance has increased since they started playing well. It's still nowhere near great, but it just further proves my point that if you put a winner on the ice, people will show up.

I highly doubt the Board of Governors would approve that kind of ownership anyway. They do background checks, due diligence, etc.
- buffalofan19

They would probably allow a minor stake to be purchased like 5-10% but that's about it.

Interesting tidbit from the forbes article about the Sabres:

27 percent and 1 trip to the playoffs. I knew they kept going up but wow. However:

I get it, they did it to get the league's money, but still, 27%.

- Zschalberg

From 2011-now I'd say the cost of going to a game has increased by at least that much.

My guess is if he's employed, he isn't any longer.
- dadeadhead

If he's employed, I doubt it's as anything but a janitor or strip club dj.

He looked like a laborer of some sort.

Either way that's an eyesore to any owner of a company.

I remember working with 2 kids at Blasdell Pizza who got fired after they were shown on the news waiting in line for Cup tickets in 99 with their work shirts on and a fight broke out.

People keep saying how Pegula spent so much on the Bills. Unlike the NHL, which loses money (Sabres were only profitable the last 2 years of Pegula's time here) the NFL makes money. Plus, it is an investment. If Pegula wants liquidity he can sell that team for more than he paid. Especially if he says they can move to a larger city.

Not saying he will, I'm just saying he has that option to make some dinero.

If I won, the first thing I would do is hide.

I know this guy didn't win, but still. Bringing attention to yourself is the worst thing you could do.

Oh hell yes. My pets would have to stay guarded with relatives. Couldn't let your kids out of your sight. People would snatch them for ransom. Return them and snatch them again.

Before I claim my ticket I get a lawyer. Claim anonymously. Use my vacation time and leave the area for at least a month, come back and act like nothing happened. Slowly start buying some assets. A house, a car, pay off debts. It'd be a while before I was fully in my new digs and I'd still work just so that no one suspected anything and I still had something to do. That is, until I figure out my idea to make my own millions.

Toronto disagrees that the prices should be only for the rich. End of the day, it's still a hockey game. Can't out price your fan base.

If I am not mistaken you can either take a lump sum taxed at almost 50% or you can take payment plans for as long as you want at a much lower tax rate.

Can make it not so obvious.

I don't watch much Toronto hockey, but I've been hearing seats are visibly empty at games. not just the Richie Rich hundred levels where they are too bust drinking Martini's and eating raw fish to bother going to back to their seats. But they just aren't popular anymore.

I don't believe it's 50%, but it is less. Read an article that said if the lottery was 500M that taking the lump the Feds would take 150M right off the top. Then NYS would need its cut.

That said, I'd still want my money up front. I know it's not the most money and it's easier to be financially irresponsible, but with the time value of money and all, I'd rather hold onto it and invest in something rather than getting the payments.

But I'd pay a guy to figure that out for me.

The seats are all sold, however. And at the end of the day, at least until the Leafs are contenders again (whenever that may be), that's all the organization cares about.

The lottery is one of the greatest pyramid schemes ever conceived, especially by the government.

The money is worth more up front. At the very least, you can put it in a savings account, and even at 0.5% you could still live off the interest alone.

Part of the Blackhawks issues before was an angry fan base because William Wirtz refused to allow the home games to be televised. He said if people wanted to watch the team, they could come to the games. The first thing changed after he passed and his son Rocky took over, was to get the home games on TV. You can't alienate your fanbase that way and expect them to shell out that kind of cash just to see the team play at all.

I'd probably start my own business. I have a few ideas that I would have the money to finance now. Probably wouldn't work, but it'd help me not go crazy.

That or I'd just buy a few subways and let those make the money.
