Yeah, Filthy is eating 50% on both. Still would have liked them to eat that contract long term.

EDIT: Vinny says he is retiring at the end of the year. I wanted that ugly contract hanging over the Flyers head for the next two

L.A. is really stacked and really big.

It's a shame that Philadelphia is out from each of the Richards, Ponger, and Vinny deals. Oh well. At least the Islanders are still paying Alexie Yashin.

They still have a lot of dead money in Umberger and AMac. But this will certainly help him. Damn you Vinny! You had them by the balls!

I despise the Flyers getting out of their painful contracts. Bryz, Brier, Pronger, now Vinney. F that. F the Kings. I especially hate that teams can trade for a broken player like Pronger simply to get to the floor.

Also, think of it this way:

"With the Second Overall Pick of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, the Philadelphia Flyers are proud to select Jordan Weal, a 3rd rounder, and $4,050,000 in completely dead cap space."

I thought it was more egregious to keep him on LTIR and get him off the cap books even as he entered the HHOF and started working for the NHL Office in New York.

The NHL is now seeing 'salary retained' with most every trade. Is this not "cap circumvention'? I don't understand what the difference is between a player having a 10% year over year real salary difference over a lengthy contract and a player being made available at a 50% price discount. Is it any different than trading cash as part of a deal, something which hasn't been done since 2005?

I hate contract terminations (Richards), trading LTIR players (Pronger), and early retirement agreements (Vinny). Is that even supposed to happen with the CBA?

It's hard to believe the way the Flyers GMs have spent Ed Snyders money on buyouts and salary retention. It almost makes you wonder if there's " A weekend at Bernies" thing going on in Philly ?

Snider is one of the few guys in the world of Sports Ownership who has an extremely high degree of leverage over the respective league. Not only does the market he's in command the 5th highest viewership in the country but he's a minority stakeholder in the media companies who go through NBC Sports.

Yeah but right now currently Jordan Weal is by the best player in this trade, he was the Monarchs best player last year. This is a good trade for Filthy because Lecavalier has said he is retiring at the end of this season for sure and now they trade 2 players who were just taking up space for a young player that actually has a good future and they can keep Ghosties-be-here in the NHL. All it cost them was money and 2 guys they want nothing to do with anyways.

This is going to be awesome. He's gonna have those kids out past curfew, Orpiks' ladies' number is gonna be written up on the Caps' bathroom wall in orange sharpie, and Barry Trotz will be bitten in the ass in several key moments trusted to Richards.

Or Richards system is clean from dope and he is the Richards of old and makes that team even better. I hope yours happen though.

DC is not among the NHL's tighter ships insofar as controlled substances go. For people who have problems with pharmaceuticals it's about the last place you'd want to be. Pro sports teams in general but there are a few organizations whom have looe policies. Richards was in trouble just six months ago after being terminated by the Kings. I hope once he's doing his tough-guy PKer thing every other night for a few months he doesn't turn back to RX painkillers.

Richards is probably a better risks/reward than I thought at first. Especially if they have checked him out some.

I mean if they put Richards in the minor whats the cap costs for the rests of the year? 100-200k? If he succeeds as a 4th liner then its a good enough deal and he has some potential to be a good 3rd line 20 goal center.

If you've ever known anybody addicted to pain killers (I have), it's a brutal recovery. I don't profess to know what kind of restrictions or testing he'll undergo, but if I'm Washington I'd be keeping a close eye on the medicine cabinet.

Weed is now legal in DC by the way. Kind of an under-reported story.

I hope it all comes crashing down in a playoff series against the Pens.

Lotsa deals going down today. Gotta imagine these GMs are all talking constantly and once one domino falls the rest start to go.

Not sure Johansen is a true 1C. I think Jones has a higher ceiling. Probably a good deal for both teams. Definitely helps NSH in the short term.

Hockey trades have become too rare these days.

Just makes me long for a trade where we can punt Perron and Kunitz from the top line.

Great trade for both teams.. Looks like we can probably cross NSH off the list of teams to acquire a dman from.
