where you getting this from? o
- rinaldo

Several reporters, both local and national, have hinted at Hextall not being willing to risk waivers on guys like Manning and Hextall was disappointed that Porter got claimed out of camp.

I think Hextall's mindset is that he'd rather make a trade and get something rather than lose a guy for nothing-unless it's a big contract.

Going the free agent route is cool if you are a player or two away from a real title contending team. It's an acceptable risk at that point.

I don't think building through Free Agency is going to be viable approach, going forward.

- johndewar

Yup. You're not going to see teams adding core pieces thru free agency anymore, unless there's a shift in how teams treat their pending FAs by signing deals that eat into UFA years.

Sanheim still not helping his case. Got dipsy dooed by some Dane who nearly scored. His close quarters game needs work
- Just5

I haven't paid a ton of attention to what is going on in Helsinki so far. Is it true Sanheim is the # 6 dman, and Konecny is on the 4th line?

Russia beating Finland late in the third, 6-4. Provorov has two assists, one just came on a goal by Fazleev, the other was on the powerplay.

The Flyers next game is the 30th, so technically they should be able to waive a player tomorrow and have him clear waivers by noon on the 30th.

I'm not sure if that's enough time to send him down and activate Streit with the cap's daily calculation process.

Both saw limited time in the first game. Sanheim seems to be playing more today, Konecny is on a line and being asked to dump and chase, which isn't his game. Team Canada is like a little league team where the dad who bought the jerseys gets to pick the line up

I am not sure on Konecny staying in that role he may move up.

Sanheim is getting Laughton type minutes. Some PP time though where he's looked good. Overall seems kind of soft imo.

I wouldnt put too much stock into the icetime thing though. Canada's coaching and selection group the last few years is very questionable.

could be...guys like porter have no trade value. just because you lose a guy on waivers doesn't mean they had any trade value...2 different things imo

If the Flyers were going to waive a player to make room for activating Streit, it would've needed to happen today. It takes 24 hours for a player to clear waivers if I'm not mistaken.
- MJL

I quite surprised Gagner wasn't just waived. Kind of seems like the logical move to me.

I thought he is still injured?

To me not sure why Gagner isn't playing over Umberger. Or Cousins over Umberger for that matter.

The best RJ can do is have a net neutral effect.

Gotcha. It says a lot that both made the team. Only one game in players are probably playing for defined roles. I saw they got beat pretty handily by the United States. Is Sweden considered the favorite in this tournament?

That would explain it then. I thought he was just a healthy scratch at this point.

Agreed on the ice time thing. How are things going Nutter? How is the weather there in the Peg? It's routinely 20c here. People are eating it up, not realizing the planet is slowly dying.

No, but they can play for your team and fill roles, and losing guys like that mean that you have to go elsewhere to fill the role.

Look at the Phantoms, Porter was expected to be a solid vet and easy call up fill in for the Flyers. Now the Phantoms have had to use guys on PTOs to fill out the line up at times this year.

Say they waive Manning and he gets claimed. Then you have to use a kid if/when you deal Schenn/Streit/Medvedev at the TDL to be the 7th guy and it interrupts his development, or you have to expend an asset to get a fill in.

I'm sure in Hextall's view he seem the time and effort spend developing Manning and losing him for nothing when he can still fill a role is something he'd rather avoid. Not saying he won't do it, but it's obviously not his first preference.

I'd go:

MDZ-Gudas
Streit-Schultz
Medvedev-Gostisbehere

To start. And yeah that third pair gives me a lot of pause, because Medvedev has struggled.

- Jsaquella

Remember that that third pairing would be receiving the easiest minutes as well

Yeah, but no team likes to lose a guy for nothing. They signed him for a reason. They liked his skill for depth.

Canada is favored, but the Swedes are really deep and good. USA is a good squad, too. Finland has some good players, too.

Canada often uses the preliminary rounds to give a shot to kids who were good soldiers/have connections etc and if they do well they stay in the spot. But when the games really matter, guys who may have started in lesser roles who earned the time get it.

Agree, Cousins should get another look. Anything is better than RJ. At least Cousins can skate and more aggressive

well then the GM made a mistake then by waiving porter if that is his belief. could have waived others who you knew wouldnt get claimed.

no you can use drewiskie as that is what he was signed for more than likely. hell you still have andy mac

spending time and development for manning is there job. at some point you cut the cord. if he truly believes he has an nhl future in a top 6 role. then yes he wont waive him.
