Good thing for Golden State that they didn't pay attention to the fact that it's hard to win in the NBA without a superstar -- Curry is one now, but how did he get that way? By working at it. |

At least I know Paul Holmgren can build a winning team and get a team to the finals.
How Sam Hinkie gets to stand there and say, "hey, trust me, my plan is to lose and we're losing, so look at that, my plan is working because I told you we would lose," and people just nod their heads like "hey, he told us we would suck, so his plan is working!!!!!" is beyond me. - AllInForFlyers
I despise tanking. If I was running a team, and I don't care what sport it is, if anyone who worked for me even suggested it, I would fire them on the spot. That's neither here nor there, I'm just looking for some progress. In building a team you just don't turn it on, overnight. It's a process that has to start moving forward. There has been no sign of that. Despite the foolish comments of others that claim to know what I want, I do want to see the Sixers succeed. I think they're going about it the wrong way. They should have more support in place around these young players. They also drafted a player, who may never play. They need to make the picks they have coming up pay off, and quickly. I have serious doubts that Hinkie can get it done. Apparently, the NBA, and Sixers ownership has some also.

If you think it's just about tanking, you're incorrect.

Is it about being a treadmill franchise then? What good is progress if it leads to mediocrity? I'd rather be patient and try to build a long-term contender. |

They're counting on every single one of those players to display character and growth and ability in an environment where they can't win.
Look at Okafor's first quarter as a professional. I am surprised that it hasn't happened more.
They are creating losers. Just like Edmonton did with Sam Gagner. Guys who will have no idea how to win ingrained into their DNA for years to come.

This isn't the NHL. Any superstar with a good #2 star to support him can turn a team full of lifetime losers into a contender. |

Progress doesn't always lead to mediocrity. I have no problem with patience, but you can make progress along the way. The issue isn't just about tanking, it's that to this point, they've done a lousy job even doing that.

Two key words. Character and culture. You need a support system in place, to show boys how to become pros and how to play the game.

Hi, I never watch the Sixers and know nothing about the NBA or really basketball in general. I don't know who the players on the team are or anything about them. I have never listened to Hinkie speak, so I have no idea what his plans are and I know nothing about building an NBA team. Having said all that, let me lay out everything wrong with the team. |

Hi. I have watched professional sports, with my employment being based on professional sports, for parts of 30 years.
I know that the Sixers don't have a point guard. I know the Sixers knew they didn't have a point guard after they traded Michael Carter-Williams, and they have now gone from that point forward and through an entire offseason without adding a starting caliber point guard.
That's called professional incompetence.
You can pretend that you know more about the NBA than everybody here. But you don't. The Sixers have one win because of gross mismanagement and incompetence, not because you are backing a plan in which you don't know -- and cannot definitively state -- that you know will be successful.
You know how I know you can't? Because you have NO IDEA WHATSOEVER when that team is going to win more than 30 games.
You have NO IDEA WHATSOEVER who they are going to draft this spring. Because you wanted them to draft D'Angelo Russell last year, and that's who they wanted to draft, and it didn't happen.
Be smug in losing if you want. But don't delude yourself into thinking that you know more about the Sixers than everyone else just because you are comfortable with them losing. |

And if memory serves correctly, that dynasty still had Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili remaining. None of them at their peak, but all still better than your average NBA player. And them being around for so long allowed the Spurs to draft enough players they were able to hit on and develop a player like Leonard.
And Curry was a 7th overall pick. The whole purpose of the tank is to gather as many high picks as possible and hope you hit on at least one. Treading water in purgatory for a decade like the 76ers did got them nowhere. It got them early playoff exits and picks in the teens where the hit rate for finding a star is obviously much lower. This is the 3rd year of the tank and the year progress has to be made and draft picks have to be converted. This is the summer when things should start to go up. If they don't, then I will question this whole process.
Would I prefer they had a more competent PG to help the big men on the roster mature this year? Absolutely and hopefully Kendall Marshall's return tonight starts that. But do I want them to sign mediocre players to awful contracts like the previous GMs did just to get a few extra wins each year? Heck no.
Edit: And now I'm done talking basketball. On to a more important sport.. |

Nobody wants them to sign mediocre players to awful contracts -- absolutely not.
But it's far too easy to give the guy who is acquiring and drafting projects and players, then trading the players he acquires and drafts because they don't fit "the plan" a pass.
I don't care how many Glenn Robinsons and Nik Stauskas and the like Hinkie cycles through. But you don't get to lose and lose and lose, then say, well, it's because I am cycling through players I draft and acquire -- because you are the guy who is supposed to be identifying the players who FIT the plan. |
