WASHINGTON — The Canadiens are in danger of missing the playoffs.

That statement might seem alarmist, particularly since Montreal is leading the Atlantic Division and has the third-best record in the Eastern Conference. The website www.sportsclubstats.com, which has algorithms to measure these things, says the Canadiens have an 86.5-per-cent chance of qualifying for the postseason.

But that figure dropped by 2.7 percentage points after losing to Minnesota on Tuesday and, put quite simply, the Canadiens aren’t playing like a playoff team.http://montrealgazette.co...aying-like-a-playoff-team

Montreal has fallen behind Boston in terms of playoff probabability, Detroit and several other teams (Florida and Tampa) are starting to make big moves. Not sure Ottawa can be a player without improving their defence and GA. I think game day mood in Montreal will be very ugly over the next while.

Now in 6th place and a leading candidate to be knocked out of playoffs. This is one of the great collapses of all time. Montreal fans still think they are contenders. The denial around what has taken place is stupendous. Is there nobody to blame? Surely someone needs to be held accountable.

I still will not count Montreal out. Their schedule is almost always the same each year, a lot of games (compared to others in division) before New Years day, almost always a big long road trip in December, and then more home games (compared to others in division) in the second half of their schedule.

Carey Price will be back and should stabilize things to a point. But not denying that they did have the beet record in the division, but now have been passed by four teams.

Detroit Red Wings 0.6142
Florida Panthers 0.6111
Boston Bruins 0.600
Ottawa Senators 0.5833
Montréal Canadiens 0.581
Tampa Bay Lightning 0.5416

The only team I see Montreal being able to stay ahead of in the standings is Ottawa.

They have had a great start and also have lost a bunch in a row. You shouldn't judge them on a hot or cold streak and they are somewhere in the middle. Even over their brutal streatch they are getting chances and usually out shoot and have good possesion numbers. Do you think all their top players will continue to do nothing? Also whenever gallagher and price get back will be a big boost. There is reason to be concerned but there is also a reason they played so well for a while.

It is undeniable Montreal hit a rough stretch but if you watched the games during this time you would have noticed that for the most part Montreal wasn't playing poorly. They lost a bunch of games where they out shot and out chanced their opponent... look at the game vs the Kings as an example - http://www.nhl.com/gamece...en/boxscore?id=2015020470 - outshot them 45 to 20. These stretches happen over the course of 82 games sometimes. Not to mention that most of this stretch coincided with a 8 game road trip.

I also get that everyone deals with injuries but not everyone loses 2 of the top 5? players on their team for 15+ games at the same time. I am certainly willing to cut any team some slack for losing their best player at the games most important position (and arguably the best player in the world) and a top line player who was a point a game when he got hurt.

I never thought they were as good as their record at the start of the year but by the same token they aren't as bad as their december record shows. I still see them as a team who will have home ice for at least the first round of the playoffs assuming Price does eventually come back healthy within the next 3-5 weeks.
