I've never understood this stubbornness that coaches have with playing 1 system & trying to fit all the square pegs into round holes to go with the round pegs that he has, or demanding the square pegs be traded for round ones.

I know this might be world-changingly innovative, but *gasp* why not just build your system to maximize whatever strengths you have while minimizing your weaknesses instead of insisting on "tweaking" existing systems.

You have a major change in your lineup in the offseason & it becomes obvious your existing system doesn't match up with your personnel? Throw out the plan and figure out a new one that DOES work instead of trying to make your bad plan magically turn good with magical coaching alchemy "tweaking".

I like that idea. I do that everyday. I am in charge of 14 guys in my division at work. I ALWAYS play to their strengths. It's a simple but fool proof plan.

Analytics are a history lesson of past events. I'll bet I can put data together to show some type of event that all champs have in common.

Different systems using different skill sets that may or may not have similar analytical data that someone goes & matches & calls it evidence!!

Right, they are a history lesson of past events, but they are also the best tools used to make educated guesses based on those past events and trends. If you're not going to use stats, analytics, in combination with watching with your own eyes to form an opinion based on nhl players, teams.. or even something like the stock market... how exactly do you make decisions? Just try and guess the whole time?

Hope you have a good time. Can I expect to see your grumpy face on tv while I watch? I also kinda hope the pens lose 5-0 and Johnston gets fired in the 2nd intermission. Would make my day to not see him behind the bench by the end of the game. I know it wont happen. Just wishful thinking.

If he wants to get another job at the NHL level he needs to do whatever good he can in his limited time left. Who would really hire him after this mess?
- sammy87

I wouldn't hire him on the basis that he wears ill-fitting, cheap suits and looks like the manager of a Red Roof Inn. And his voice is weak.

Will another team deny MJ a job because he couldn't come in from JRs and break a seven year culture of entitlement, double standards, and complacency? I think a rebuilding team may ask him to build their culture, not try to replace one so deeply entrenched.

My theory on people who insist that statistics don't have value is that they fall into these two categories:

- They are innumerate and it's more convenient to attack empirical data than to admit ignorance;

- There are no absolutes in the scientific method. Innumerate people find this confusing and would rather feel much more satisfied if they could categorize things in a vague, mutilated fashion, i.e., the eye test.

None of this is relevant to the Penguins' absolute poop team defense, their total lack of interest in gaining or regaining the puck, or the undeniable impulse to attempt to make the cutest play possible at any given stage of the game. Pittsburgh are classified as 'a team that doesn't know what they are.' This is untrue. They are a team determined to take the maximum amount of shortcuts with the least amount of competitive spirit while imagining their three good players scoring at a higher rate than this team approach gives away in the form of goals against.

So is that why a poop Flyers team can continually beat a better more analytical savvy Pens team??

So plus/minus is bogus but Corsi is the real deal?

Both are formulated the exact same way!!!! Yes but people are innumerate that question Corsi????

You certainly have your poop together!!

Innumerate hockey fans also show a tendency to create straw men and argue against things I have neither said nor implied. Then, repeat previously discredited memes or steer the conversation into irrelevant, off topic discussions. Finally, punctuate the comment with an ad hominem to be sure that everyone is aware of the lack of respect for scientific knowledge and ignorance of logical fallacies.

So tell me how any game data in 2013 can help todays team?

Can you rely on data 2/3 years old to help you identify how a player will play now?

There's a statistic you may have heard of. It's not all that advanced. It's known far and wide as "save percentage".

I'm out & about not sitting at home on my iPad so things are a little difficult.

But riddle me this batman, how is plus/minus disregarded & Corsi accepted??

Oh & for the record I've never discounted statistical data! So not sure if that's what you have implied & directed at me!

Straw man argument??? I replied to your comment with a factual statement that questions your accusations! If that's a straw man argument then call me Mr Scarecrow!

Oh he will dismiss every advanced stat there is, until he has a small sample size that disproves the overall probability and prediction that advanced stats typically shows. No point in debating him, he doesn't debate.

They recently put one here next to the arena in WBS which makes it hard to avoid for a pre game meal like tonight. Now I'm sitting in my seat for warm ups regretting my decision.

Fvck it. I've been doing this "no carb" thing for several months and I'm starving all the time.

That's poop is no fun. Carbs are so delicious... I did that for a bit. Every meal was green veggies and meat, except for after a workout, then I ate carbs. But (frank) did it suck.

I've been doing that plus all added sugar as well but allow myself 1 night a month for a break for the past 2 years. I'm holding steady at my high school weight now at 6'2 205 which is awesome but carbs really kick my ass when I have them like tonight.

I guess being 1 of the most dominant teams in the league for 2 months last season with the proper pieces isn't allowed to be reason to believe it can be that way again if GMJR gets the roster constructed properly again? I'm by no means defending HCMJ, well I guess to an extent I am, he's made mistakes for sure but he hasn't been given the best hand to play by GMJR. It's been very apparent to those astute enough to know the team was never going to be successful with the defensive corp they've been saddled with and I pointed that out the day the Kessel trade was made. Sure a new coach may change things and make things more exciting but the overall results will be the same until the roster issues are corrected and I think it makes no sense to wait to fire the coach to correct the roster mistakes when correcting those mistakes may make replacing the coach unnecessary.
- jaydogg1974

Two months is a laughably small sample size. Since then, he's been figured out. I get that there have been injuries, but Disco managed to make his team play well at least during the regular season despite them and he's not a great coach by any stretch. Like somebody said, why are coaches so stubborn with their systems and insist that they need round pegs to match up with their round holes when they have a team full of square pegs? Why not just make square holes? That's what a competent coach would do. MJ has not shown any effort into doing that, and that is why I have no faith. The defense is lack luster and we wouldn't be cup favorites, but a new coach would at least give us a shot.

Sugar is other devil. It's funny, the wife and I read every label at the grocery store and it's shocking how much of it is added to food these days.

I was never fat or anything, but my PCP said I could stand to lose 10 or 15 lbs. I lost that in a month.

Of course the down side is I'm STARVING all the time. So....
