Fair enough but playing with stars would be all that more advantages for our prospects, as opposed to forcing them to turn the tides on their own.

You would pass on Steven Stamkos? At 25 years of age.

This isn't jagr at 40

- Cherry--Skoal

I wouldn't do it automatically is all I'm saying. Even Mario and Gretzky never won a Cup after age 28. LA and Chicago won all their Cups with their stars before their mega contracts. Malkin and Crosby are getting farther away from that one Cup they won, when they were younger....just sayin'...just when the Leafs are drafting patiently, I'd think carefully about any mega contract to any player.

What could go wrong, bringing in a high priced, highly touted young star, who's had a couple of sub-par years(by his standards), and instantly giving him the C, while all the cameras are pointed at him?

As bobo said last night, if he's there ufa go all in on him sign me up, but stay away from a trade... That's not the road to go.

if Stamkos made up his mind about playing somewhere else next year, that team already knows about it

I get it. It's a lot of money that's going to be tied up in one player.

That being said, we'll be able to surround him with lots of young talent pretty quickly... so he'll have a good, cheap supporting cast... won't be a one man show.

Lots of potential for it to backfire though.

True. My concerns are strictly about the cap and that sweet spot of elite value. Watching Sidney freaking Crosby drag my pool team down this year scares the poop out of me.

Buddy of mine was saying when was the last team to win the cup signing a huge ufa.

My argument was that no player of stamkos caliber has been available. Not In the last decade anyways.

Using it as negotiating ploy..... Look I want to go to Toronto, give me more cash & more years and I'll stay.

And now consider the cash that Stammer could make in Toronto with endorsement deals.

Regardless if TB can offer and extra year, A. There's no way that the TB market can equal the potential overall money in Toronto, and B. TB is going to have difficulty managing the the cap with big deals for Hedman, Palat, Kucherov and Johnson all coming down the pipe.

The bottom line is if money is what Stammer is after, there's more to be made in Toronto than Tampa.

nieuwendyk? cup
scott niedermayer? cup

lol used to happen all the time. only reason nobody wins with star free agent signings anymore is because they never make it to free agency.

He might even get a big company like Nike to endorse him!

Big stars get endorsements no matter where they go. He's going to get the same deals in Toronto as he will anywhere else.

Those are a little different though, none of those are mega contracts under the cap.

The cba makes it difficult for franchise players to be available in their prime.

It's at the point where it's kind of unprofessional.

I was thinking the same thing.

Who knows what the reasons are or if it was an accident or whatever. I just feel like it is the wrong way to go about things.
