I've always been a fan of the ozone vs. dzone faceoff totals as at least some kind of indicator. Take it all with a grain of salt. It's all important but it all has its limitations.

Stats guys - real ones - will tell you it's all about 'correlation'. Shot attempts apparently 'correlates' very well with winning hockey games but calling it possession is what seems to frustrate the issue.
