A. Matt Ryan wasn't a 1st overall pick.
B. I'm not blaming any loss specifically on Tryod, but better play from the QB last night and we win.

I'm done being average to below average at that position.

And your point about only 2 drafted QB'S in the last 10 years winning is kind of my point.

Brees, Brady, Manning, Rodgers, Roethlisberger even are all getting up there. I want to get a guy now that could potentially be in his prime when the league is wide open

- sbroads24

What guy though? You named Kapernick, dalton, stafford and ryan. Those guys are all mediocre and have been with their original teams since being drafted. My point on only 2 QBs being drafted in the last 10 years winning Super Bowls show there are barely any true studs out there. It's a hard position. Sure I want a better player than tyrod but from where? New QBs suck or flame out quick. A lot of the elite college QBs don't translate to the NFL. It's a crapshoot.

Tyrod was a nobody and was a shrewd pickup by Rex. He was a good find. Sure we need someone else but 20 other teams do to and more when the old elite QBs retire

If there is any truth to the rumor, any at all, that the Blue Jackets blogger Paul Berthelot posted about the team listneing to offers on Ryan Johansen, Tim Murray should be calling without question.

Who would have to go the other way? Reinhart and the 1st round pick in 2016, for starters, and it would also mean the cap would be a near immediate concern as well, especially when it comes to guys like Moulson, Gorges, and Gionta when Johansen is due for his next deal (granted that he would still be an RFA).

So in other words you want to forgo the 1st overall pick in 2014 and our 2016 1st for one guy?

And prolly 15+ more years going forward.

I think Tyrod could be the worst thing to happen to this team in a couple years. Let me explain. He's just good enough to win a few games by himself, and rarely will he be the reason why we lose, however, I'm not sure he's good enough to put the team over the top. I think he's too slight, he's got no NFL mileage and he's already constantly injured. What's it going to be like in 3 or 4 years? So in finishing 7-9, 8-8 or even 9-7 we'll miss the playoffs and be outside the top 10 where the franchise QB's live. Sure we could have an Aaron Rodgers fall, or we could hit on a Tom Brady, but those guys are perfect storms of luck. Something which every Buffalo fan knows that this place doesn't have.

Johansen might be one of the few guys that is worth it when it comes to talent, ability, and age with how it fits with the rest of the team.

I am not saying I would do it, but that is a beginning to what it would take, and I would have to seriously consider it.

Think of it this way: every Sabres fan would be overjoyed if Reinhart puts up years like Johansen's last two.

Reinhart was the 2nd overall pick. Johansen is a former 4th overall pick. And is 23. If that could land you a player of Johansen's caliber, you do it.

Johansen is top 20 offensive player in the league.

Ek has a rumor on teams looking at a package deal from Winnipeg for Ladd and Byfuglien.

Putting aside that this would never happen from a Buffalo standpoint with Kane being on the team and the friction between him and Byfuglien, is this the kind of trade that Buffalo would need to make to fill out both their top pair D issue and their top 6 forward issue?

Byfuglien is a top pairing D man and Ladd is at least a top 6 LW, if not a top line LW.

Does Buffalo even have enough to make that kind of trade? They are both pending UFA's, which helps, but they could command $12M per season between the two of them.

I maintain that going through the draft one more time, and then attacking free agency either this coming offseason or next is the way to go, but this kind of trade contains the components that they need.

- kingcong39

Yeah, setting aside the personal issues. It would have to be something like Ennis, Larsson, McCabe/Pysyk and probably a mid-first. Right now at least, come the deadline or the draft the price might come down based on suitors/if they feel they can lock up their guys to good contracts.

Sure, but how come in Sabre land we only see what we get in return, and completely disregard what we give away?

I know it's a different sport, but this is exactly what they said about Sammy Watkins. And it will haunt him and the Bills as long as he's here.

No its not. Watkins was a rookie who didn't even play a game. Ryan Johansen is a known asset, and a top player in the league.

have had issues with roman's play calling all year...it wasn't until the last few games or so that they've been using play action...

loved that they threw some bombs to stretch out the d, but why did they wait until the second half to that?

- Michael Pachla

Definitely thought that was odd given the fact that the Bills have been top 5 in rushing all year. Have been screaming out that it was the perfect place for it, but maybe it was a double bluff by Roman, yeah, that's it. At least there're no more goddamn draw plays on 3rd and 12.

I don't know if it's in there somewhere, but the Red Wings released a pic of their stadium series jersey. I kinda like the huge numbers on the sleeves. It's different. Overall, it could be worse.

It would be very tempting if the Blue Jackets would accept that kind of return for Johansen. Very tempting.

Two parts to what Buffalo would be giving away: will Reinhart ever reach the level of production that Johansen already has displayed, at the age of only 23? How high do you believe the Sabres pick will be in the 2016 draft?

I am guessing the Blue Jackets would want more than Reinhart and the Sabres 2016 first, because that's how good Johansen is as a player.

The biggest question from the Sabres aspect would not be what they are giving up if it is along the lines of the above, it is what the trade would mean for the salary cap, specifically with Johansen being in line for a big pay day even though he will still be an RFA at the end of his current 2 year deal.

I get what you are saying, but in terms of straight player ability, Watkins cannot shine Johansen's shoes in terms of overall talent in their respective sports.

It would mean the Sabres could roll a top 3 center lineup consisting of O'Reilly, Johansen, and Eichel, or decide to move O'Reilly to wing when Eichel is ready and have Eichel and Johansen as their top 2 centers.

That is a championship level center lineup.

It wouldn't work. I like Johansen, but he hasn't been good this year, he was benched because he was out of shape. He had heart issues over the summer, so maybe he couldn't train as hard, but nevertheless. It's disconcerting when you have a player with heart issues and then misses time because at first he was "fatigued" 8 games into the season, and then it's because "he's out of shape". It wouldn't work because, you can't waste Eichel on the wing, O'Reilly while able to play the wing, supposedly hates it, and there just aren't enough minutes to go around, someone is going to get left out and their play will suffer because of it. And no way in hell are we giving up Reinhart AND a potential top 7 pick. Never happen.

Don't look now, but Grigorenko has only 1 less point than Eichel. And 2 more than the Skunk.

Michael you bring up some great points in this blog. For me, the luster of "well at least they're competitive again" has started to wear off when you realize just how far the team still has to go in order to complete with the powerhouse teams in the west. I am expecting more of the same tonight, unfortunately.
