It's not a black-white situation. Dead space hurts (because you're spending money that you're getting no value from) but dead space when you need free space hurts worse. Effective cap management has to take the long view, and it's never going to be a smooth ride. - Scoob
You should just be GM. Great insight |

Well, using history as a guide, I feel comfortable in assuming that the Flyers, even with this new approach, will be a team that is close to the cap limit. - Scoob
You want to use history as a guide, but when is the last time the Flyers drafted and developed in the salary cap era? Based on contracts, it will actually be almost impossible for the Flyers to reach the cap ceiling in a few years due to having players on ELCs.
We will have
Schenn - G - Jake
XXX - Coots - Simmonds
Raffl - Laughton - XXX
Leier - Cousins - XXX
AMac - Ghost
MDZ? - XXX
XXX - XXX
Where do you add a FA with NAK, Konecny, Provorov, Sanheim, Morin, Alt, Hagg, Straka, Lindblom, 1st rounder this year all waiting for spots to open up? We will hopefully be in the position of moving guys out to create room for young guys...not FA

The trouble is, if Lecavalier doesn't retire, you're basically carrying $4.5mm in dead cap space, plus have a disgruntled player hanging around. I'd buy him him, because the cap savings, removal of a potential distraction and freeing up a slot for a kid or free agent is worth 2 seasons of $850k or so dead space.
I just don't know if he's going to retire or not. If he is, I suspect he waits until after he gets the next July 1st bonus. That falls after the buyout window |

It makes sense from the business end and personnel end to buy him out unless they literally have plenty of cap room to let him sit and rot |

Omg if no one on the Flyers has said it then it must not be true. Yea he is a healthy scratch because the 6 turd defenseman we have are much better. Fire the coach, right everybody? That's the problem first lavy, then berube now the new guy. A lot of fans clueless same core guys for 4 years now 1 playoff series. Everyone on the team should be avaible especially giroux if you don't think so then your fine with the last few years & moving forward with the same guys. Talking about the cap situation next year, I wouldn't re-sign any of the turds that are ufa or rfa. It's sad when Buffalo is a better team now. - Williamc5468

Sorry, I misunderstood what you were saying. You are right if you look at it that way (I was just thinking in terms of total buyout). To me it is obvious that we weren't doing anything this year so I didn't mind paying him this year to reduce the effects in the future. With prospects now ready to debut, I think it is the time to make room for them. - YuenglingJagr
I agree, which is why the team I'm going to propose when I get home is going to have a number of young players on it, including multiple young defenseman. Compared to the one you posted which included only Laughton and Gostisbehere.

2 of the players on that list need to be re-signed this off season. Cousins is in the last year of his EL deal, and Leir, Laughton, and Gostisbehere will need to be re-signed in 2 years.
