More Hamonic: Says he loves team but family needs him. Says it hasn't and won't affect him on ice and he's concentrating on winning. #isles

I gothcha. Just curious why Snow's handcuff himself to swapping Ham for an established roster Dman. Those trades are difficult. At least entertain adding 2 forward prospects for depth. If the D struggles other deals could be made. i.e. pick and a prospect for a rental like Hamhius for example.

Of the 4 teams speculated as trade partners who's the fans pick team wise and player wise?

- stowerkraut

WPG makes the most sense on several levels. That's where he's from. They can probably afford to swap defensemen (Myers being the likely candidate).

EDM is probably the sole team that I would accept the centerpiece of the return being a forward, but some sort of defenseman would have to come back also. (Not Ference or Nikitin)

CGY is a possibility I guess, not really sure what comes back. I have no real interest in Wideman(RH) or Russell(LH). I'm intrigued to see if they would consider sending back Brodie. He's a LHD and Hamilton is the only real quality RHD they have. Hammer and Gio would make quite the top pairing.

Because top pairing D men may be the most difficult position to develop. If he loses Hamonic and settles for a rental he sets himself up for a big gap in the lineup down the line.. and if Pulock was ready he would already be playing in the NHL. Most top pairing potential guys are up within 2 seasons unless the NHL team is complete garbage and management knows it could hurt their development.
- tredbrta

This is the Isles with Cappy coaching so I'm not sure about Pulock playing if he was ready? I would be very surprised if he was not ready at least for bottom pairing minutes at this point.

Okposo is a pending UFA that the Isles aren't going to re-sign and Hamonic wants out regardless. It's a no-brainer for us.
- eichiefs9

I know. Still an overpay IMO. Hamonic is cost controlled and better defensively. Hamonic straight up would be closer to fair.

With his comments today I doubt Snow will move him until the OS unless he gets what he wants.

This makes so little sense to me. His family needs him, but necessarily in Winnipeg. What does him living in Vancouver provide his family that him living in NY can't? If it's a dying relative, then he can visit more I suppose but really not that much more. If they need money for medicine then he can provide that living in NY. Wtf can it be?

I mean with cap considerations yeah, but right or wrong I think guys like Shattenkirk get valued (and thus priced accordingly) very highly.

Carlos Danger must really have nothing else better to do. Who would ever waste their time on a hockey podcast?, especially an Islanders one (hipsters)

Is said family in Winnipeg though? He was born in the area but maybe the concern is out of province.

I think Shattenkirk has similar value to Seabrook or Letang honestly. He's pretty close to a Subban or Kalrsson and better than Yandle.

So the guy who was sent down because he was playing like crap is going to replace our 2nd leading scorer and not miss a beat? Hamonic is better defensively that Shattenkirk and now losing a top 6 forward as well for a PP specialist? Not sure how that helps them right now

I completely understand the concept just saying being limited to 4 teams hurts getting full value and they'd be crazy to not explore all options. I don't think any of the teams have a fair value Dman

WINN
Buff - pending UFA
Myers - high $, inconsistent

CAL
Hamilton - inconsistent but prob untouchable
Gio - prob not, wears the C
Russell - maybe

Not even going to do VAN
Weber, Sbisa - LOL

Nobody said the situation was ideal. 24 hours ago I would have never even entertained the thought of moving Hamonic and I probably would have told you that Hamonic was going to retire an Islander.

I think you're grossly overvaluing Okposo and grossly undervaluing Shattenkirk. Shattenkirk may not be a defensive stalwart, but he's most certainly not Marc Andre Bergeron either. And Okposo is hot right now but his effort level is, overall, questionable at best and he fails to contribute unless he is playing with Tavares.

So you have two guys that are goners no matter what anyone thinks/feels/wants etc...
If the Blues were willing to trade Shattenkirk I would happily move one or both of them.

I'm guessing he gets dealt in the offseason unless a team in that area loses a key piece to injury

He was born in the sticks, but after his father passed when he was 10 the family sold the farm and moved to Winnipeg.

That would be PTR not Shattenkirk. He is injury prone and I have seen him defensively exposed on many delightful occasions. Particularly the first round of 14.

If he was that good he wouldn't be the name they always toss out as trade bait.

Parayko could be that good. Scary talent.

Well if Okposo looks like he will be a casualty via free agency, then you still have the dilemma of wondering who will replace him. It just comes next season instead of this season.

I think we have to at least entertain the notion that Snow could have asked him to add in the bit about "playing the whole season if he has to" to stop some of the bleeding in his negotiating power. If GM's think Snow and Hamonic are willing to wait out the season they may up their offers to force a trade.

I hate to agree with rangerdanger, but he's right. We can deal with the issue now or we can deal with it on July 2nd. I don't see Okposo as the piece that is going to lead us to the Cup this year. May as well move him while his stock is high.

edit: it doesn't have to be Shattenkirk either. Just the name we happened to be discussing.

It did seem like a ploy from Hamonic playing the entire year to stop the bleeding.
