Ya, will combine it with the recap of tonight's game. Not a ton of news, some stuff up. mostly back-story on Daley, Mashinter and Desi.

Maybe so, but each trade taken individually doesn't seem so far fetched to me.
- EbonyRaptor

Individually they may make some sense, but there are too many moving parts for them all to happen. Relying on pieces from one trade to move in another one rarely works out.

From the article...

"Daley and Ryan Garbutt were acquired from the Dallas Stars by Chicago in the summer for winger Patrick Sharp and defence prospect Stephen Johns in a deal that is looking more lopsided by the week."

I know Sharpie's in a more friendly offensive system and he is with two playmakers, but still happy for him...

Again why take Daley in that deal when Oduya is still here waiting to sign...meanwhile Nill got Sharp/Johns and Oduya when all was said and done.

Hopefully Stan can move Daley for picks and regain that cap space to go after another vet dman who will fit the system better. As Mex mentions plenty of vets out there at the end of their deals...Russell as several have mentioned and what about Soupy - maybe a bit long in the tooth here but he certainly knows the system...and is a left handed shot...

Since when? I'd argue that Q seldom if ever dresses 'muscle' just for muscle sake and he certainly doesn't play that type of player much if he happens to be in the lineup.
- paulr

Bollig, Scott, Eager, Brookbank ... last year's pre-season tryouts for Labrie, Bass and Mashinter ending up with Carbomb coming back.

It isn't just Q who likes some fighters - it is also players like Toews and Kane.

He doesn't dress goons in the playoffs unless he has to but he likes to have an option to go to in the regular season when necessary. If Desi, Garbutt and Shaw were playing that role more it probably wouldn't be necessary and Mashinter is not the answer but he obviously doesn't like Toews getting into it as much as he has - Mashinter may be a way to tell Toews to let others handle it.

Interesting angle. I don't want Toews fighting either. EVER. I applaud him sticking up against the buffoon Backes, but still....let others (we can afford to lose for 5 minutes-or longer) handle it

Looks more and more like Nill owned that trade and boxed Stan in. Obviously, someone thought Daley would work but I can't believe those 2 players were actually targeted.

1. Trade Daley (+) to Ottawa for 2nd and Puempel.

2. Trade Puempel and a lower pick to Calgary for Russell.

3. Trade Bickell, Ottawa's 2nd, Dano to San Jose for Marleau ($2.6M retained).

The Hawks would clear $700K in cap space with the Daley for Russell exchange. Marleau with $2.6M retained would be a wash for Bickell's $4M this season and next. The Hawks would clear another $925K from trading Dano, so thats around $1.6M in cap space they would have to use at the TDL to get a little help at that time. They would also be free of Daley's $3.3M next season but would have to sign another d-man to take Russell's spot for 2016/17 - or Svedberg/Gustaffson are ready for a full time role.

Marleau-Toews-Hossa
Panarin-Anisimov-Kane
Shaw-Kruger-Teravainen
Tikhonov-Kero-Garbutt

Keith-Hjalmarsson
Russell-Seabrook
Gustafsson/TvR/Rozsival

Sure "they" will, as there wouldn't be much of a cost to acquire Daley outside of taking on his salary. The Hawks don't need to be looking at "bringing back" Visnovsky (KHL) or Hejda if they move Daley, there are a lot of DMen in the final year of their contracts available around the league.
- MexicoHawk

Mex, can you give us an idea what Nill's first offer for Sharp was? You said there was an offer at the draft Stan passed on.

Bc salary cap space is like Pure Gold for GM's and Nill said, "Sure! We'll take Sharp's $6mil off the books but you have to take back our 4th forward at 3.3 mil or no deal". Nobody is going to help the Hawks clear cap space

Pretty sure Mashinter was dressed for both of the games that Toews fought in...I hope that is the last time JT drops the mitts this year. That Right hand is way too important to be punching a helmet!

Honestly, say Kane and Toews are on a line and we make a trade for an older player with Sharpies scoring ability for some depth and a d prospect. It's vry likely they have success as well. Sharp can put the puck in the net, he always could. So why would anyone think he would go to Dallas and not be productive.

Islanders are quietly looking to trade Hamonic but need to get the same kind of player back. If only....

@FriedgeHNIC: The Islanders & Travis Hamonic -- https://t.co/P7lJSGRR1F

@DarrenDreger: Credit to @FriedgeHNIC on Hamonic story. He has family concerns in West Canada and requested a move before the season...

@DarrenDreger: Hamonic loves the Isles. This is personal. Wpg, Edmtn, Cgy and Van all preferred. Might expand to other west cities. Tough on Isles....

@DarrenDreger: Garth Snow wants an equitable player in return. Given status of Hamonic tough deal to make.

Just St. Louis.

Mashinter wasn't dressed for NJ and Toews got into it some against the Oilers too (after the contact with Crow as well as something with Reinhardt). Not sure if Mashinter was up for that one either.

Hindsight is 20/20, but even just dumping Sharp for Garbutt at full salary would have allowed room for Oduya without putting the Stars over the cap too much.

In the end, we keep Oduya and AHL-defenseman Stephen Johns as depth and get Garbutt. The whole Oduya vs. Daley thing is what's known as opportunity cost, and that was totally screwed up (UNLESS they know something terrible about Oduya's health that kept them from re-signing him).

I know I'm just trading hockey cards in my mind, but it seems like there was no internal deadline with Saad. Stan made a GREAT trade getting back Anisimov and the potential of Dano, and I give him full credit. But if the Saad trade even happens earlier, maybe the dust settles a little (because I think the FO was truly shocked and disappointed with Saad), Bowman takes care of Oduya and goes into the draft with a realistic asking price for Sharp. Or, with Saad gone, maybe he decides to keep Sharp as one of his top LWs and goes crazy trying to dump Bickell and Versteeg. Or he buys out Bickell.

It's fantasy sports, I know, but yikes... Some of Stan's poorer trades were at least offset by strong work getting KHL and college players to sign as free agents.

As an aside...Colin Fraser just retired. So, that leaves Bickell from the original trade...

Losing Hamonic will sting.

He'd look good here but Garth would want TVR plus for him. Winnipig has the assets and he is from Manitoba. Hope they don't though.

Yeah. Whole host of reasons it wouldn't work here. Be great if we could trade Daley for Harmonic though. Similar cap hits and Daley would be a top 4 on many other teams. Sigh.

Mashinter played against NJ. That was the first game he was called up for.
