I think the data does prove that more shots doesn't necessarily mean more goals. Our system gives up shots and possession but not a ton of goals. Fleury's save percentage might be less of an anomaly in this system and not a stat you would expect to mean revert.
A system based on counter attacking would produce some of the stats we are seeing.
That being said if you built your team on forward depth then you do not want to play this system. You want your system to play to your strength and try to control possession with your skilled forwards. Protect the defense by keeping the puck in the other zone.
If you had a few offensive players good stay at home defenseman and a bunch of Adams in your bottom six then playing this system would make sense as your forwards wouldn't be good enough to control the puck in the offensive zone but would be better protected by staying back and hoping you find a goal or two.
The team is built to attack. This system isn't doing that.
It was a reasonable idea of MJ to insulate the defense by playing conservative, but clearly it isn't working. We're giving up more chances this way than we would playing run and gun.
We should overload every puck and play high pressure defense rather than this passive crap. - cygnus41
Normally I would say if you don't play defense you can't win but this team's defense men are bad enough that I really don't think it matters. With Parise out for Minnesota tonight might be a good night to just play pond hockey.

Eventually allowing lots of shot attempts will yield lots of scoring chances.
We're not a stanley cup contender this year anyway. The most important thing is the development of our young guys and getting the chemistry going. Our defensemen were never going to be up to scratch, we have to accept that and play the sort of hockey that gets the guys excited about winning.

Well, one way of developing young guns (who are they, by the way?) is to let Scuderi eat up all the minutes by being a human bowling ball.

we have most of the pieces we need to be contenders. we need a coach and a top 4 Dman. we need our stars to start playing like stars. we have the best line up we have had in years. we will be a threat for the cup this year. we just need a couple changes

I'm sure plenty said the same thing right before therrien was fired too.
HCMJ will not make it to the end of this season. He may be intellectually smart but he has no common sense. Good blog, BTW Gunner. Solid and I concur. He is unable, unwilling or too stupid to get the most of his players strengths. In fact, HCMJ may not make it to Christmas. Unless, he grows a brain.
The last 10 and probably 20 cups have been won by teams playing a responsible 200 foot game. Suggesting the coach is setting his team up to fail by playing two way hockey is dead wrong. The problem is the Pen's GM who thought bringing in a player (Kessel) who has demonstrated he will not play a 2 way game instead of bringing in a couple of better defensemen or 2 way forwards is the real issue.
Other than the 1980's Oilers or the 90's Penguins show me one team who won a Stanley cup without having the ability to play a 2 way game. - paulr
He is having them play a one way game. One. Way. Get it? Geesh, some people.
man how is it that anyone else asks for a link and they get like 20 answers. then i ask and nothin but crickets.
do you guys not like me? cause my mom says im one of the cutest and funniest guys around - pensfan024
Sorry bro. This one's on NBC Sports Network, so I don't need a link. Otherwise I normally link my nikkas up. Check reddit hockey streams though. That's where I always get my links from.
Thanks. Bennett maybe deserved one or two more games there but thats not much issue right now. - Zac_O
Eh. I had no issue with Bennett getting those games cus he's played well on the third line, but if Hornqvist can't definitively claim a top 6 spot we have some major issues. I'm excited to see how we play tonight after the "closed doors" meeting the players had. Also the d pairings are finally exactly what I want them to be. If things don't look better I want heads on spikes and those spikes up asses.
