I went to that game at the aud against the Russians. They played fantastic, beat them 12-6 I think. This town went crazy!

Yeah 12-6 might have been right. The Russians were beating every other nhl team in the series then they came to Buffalo. Scboenfeld and korab hit the sh@t out of them early in the game, intimidating the hell out of them. 2 days later the sabres played in Montreal. When the sabres skated on the ice the Montreal crowd game them a 3 minute standing ovation. Pretty amazing stuff.

The offsides challenges are more of a desperation attempt by a coach to slow the game down and possibly get lucky that a matter of inches negates a goal. This is not good for the game. If the objective is to call back the blatant offsides, there is an easy solution. 2 minute penalty for a failed review. This will cut out a lot of the 5 minute reviews where one inch could negate a goal and kill the flow of the game.

If the flyers make Simmonds available, the sabres should be all over that.

I wonder if Foligno, Larsson and a 2nd would be enough.

This is incredible. Thanks for posting that. I clicked to see what it was and figured to watch a little and havent been able to stop watching.

Electric is what i would call it every time perreault carries the puck.

We have a " Simmonds " already in Gus and Foligno IMO, I know they won't score as much.

I'd much rather have Simmonds over Foligno, and I like Simmonds over Gus at this point in his career. I would just be keeping my ears open if he becomes available, acquiring him, gives us two strong PP units IMO. And a perfect player who can play on Line 2 right now, as some of the team develops.

You're welcome. I started watching it and couldn't stop either. I recall that Russian player Yakushev. If he was in the NHL he'd be hands down the best player.

I was just watching another video about Perreault and even Guy Lafleur called him the greatest skater and stick handler of his generation.

And here's a scary thought- in the 1981 Canada Cup, the top line for Canada was Perreault-Lafleur-Gretzky.

That game against the Soviet Wings might have been the greatest Sabres game ever.

I think in the right situation Girgs could put up the same type of numbers. If you look at how Simmonds career progression has gone, it's not all that different than what we've seen from Girgs. The main difference is the amount of time Simmonds has spend in the penalty box, and to be quite honest, I don't need Girgs changing that part of his game at all.

I wouldn't hate making a trade for him if the price was right. I can't honestly speak to what I'd be fine with sending their way, but if you're moving Foligno and Larsson, where are you putting Simmonds in? Because those are 3rd and 4th liners and that's not where you'd probably want to put Simmonds if you want him to put up the same type of numbers he has the last few years.

Not sure if I was there that night, or if it was just after he did it, but I know as a kid I was at a game at the Aud where they gave out pennants (kids these days would scoff at them!) with 500 on them (I think the zeroes were pucks).

Just found this:

"Perreault became only the 12th player in NHL history to score 500 goals, and is currently one of 41 players in the League to have done so."

Edit: just watched the clip - they're in white, so I guess he did it at home. Wonder if I was there. :D

If it cost Larsson, foligno and a 2nd. I'd like to see the lines like this..

Kane OReilly Moulson
Ennis eichel Simmonds
McGinn grigensons reinhart
Whomever Legwand gionta

Along with Simmonds firmly planted in front of the goalie on the PP

Just incredible that they put up 12 goals on the Soviet Wings. I was reading that the Russian team was so distraught losing the game (Buffalo was their only loss) that the team was kept in seclusion for 3 days.

After Martin and Robert showed up, Perreault was more of a playmaker and he even admitted his job was to set up Rico and Rene. And he was a first ballot hall of famer.

Two things stick out- perreault was bigger than i remember, and if you were on the other team, you really wanna keep your head on a swivel when korab was on the ice.

What I also found interesting is they broke up the french connection. I think they had Perreault-Spencer-Robert and Martin was with Gare. If memory serves correctly, the Sabres were slumping prior to the Russian game so putting up 12 goals on them was certainly amazing.

Russians didn't play a physical style back then but what I found watching this game is they played a little dirty with their sticks.

And Korab and Guevermont

Better than Clarke, Ratelle, Trottier, Shutt., Unger, Sittler and Redmond. Lafleur, Espo and Dionne were better.

So sorry for being so late.to the party...but traveling all.day..one more.flight to go.

Good points by all on the Dom vs Gil.debate.
For me it is Perrault...like M said it.was electrified every time he touched the puck...he compete against.Orr.as the best.puck handler in the league and that is no exaggeration. Fans would stand up as soon as he gather the puck circling behind his net as he walked past.the other team with dazzling moves.that todays players have a hard time matching once a.game. He was one of the best centers of his day, but the game was different, much different. As far as comparison to Espo...Different styles, Phil could not carry Perreault jock in terms of carry the puck and skating...but his net.presence was.dominant...Orr carried the puck into the zone..Phil drove straight for the net for.tips,.rebounds.
Lastly, consider that Dom embarrassed the team in the end by demanding a.trad and further eroding g his value back to the Sabres.by demanding the payback was minimized so he could.win a.cup....sad ending to sabres career.
