Remember when Luke tried to keep a puck in the zone last night by going to his knees, but instead it went 5-hole on him and gave the Oilers a breakaway in which Neuvirth had to make an outstanding stop? Yeah, I do....

I think a 1st plus a prospect from a playoff team. He hasn't looked great to start the season but if he pulls it together again, a playoff team in need of a goalie could jump. Winnipeg comes to mind or even Calgary or Edmonton if they start competing for a spot.

So use Winnipeg as an example. So 1st in the late teens and early 20's plus say Jack Roslovic. None of that is top shelf but a Masonless flyers probably finish bottom 5. So you get a top line forward with the Flyes pick, hopefully another late 1st gem like Konecny with the Jets and a top notch middle forward prospect.

Mason is not a big enough upgrade over Pav and Hutch plus dont be surprised if Hellybuck challenges by the end of the year. Winnipeg has no interest in a Goalie

Yeah Luke would've just had Mcdavid blow by him, resulting in no injury.

This team so badly needs an injection of speed, skill and size in the worst way. Currently Voracek is the only player on the roster to have all 3. Hell, they don't even have many guys that have 2 of the 3:

Skill and speed: Jake, Read (kinda sorta), Del Zotto, Giroux (not really fast but quick and shifty) and perhaps Medvedev

Skill and size: Jake, Couturier and to a lesser degree, B Schenn and Simmonds

Size and Speed: Jake and to a lesser extent Medvedev

And, outside of Giroux, and to a lesser extent Couturier, they aren't exactly loaded with guys with both top notch offensive and defensive hockey sense.

Barring a lottery win and some propects developing much faster than expected, I can't see this team in the playoffs before 17-18 and contending before 18-19.

Those picks and prospects will be too old to contribute by the time the Flyers will contend again so we have to aim for younger assets.

If you want it fast, it won't be cheap and easy.

You lost me after "all 3" But I agree with your premise. Especially the 18-19 projection.
This team has less speed than a senior league team, and no heart and frankly little to no leadership. They ate making the exact same mistakes that they have made under Laviolette and Berube. At some point, as much as I like Giroux, you have to place the bvlame on the players who dont come to play every night or dont hold themselves or their teammates accountable for sloppy play or laziness.

What else would you like Giroux to do? Guy shows up every night and has brought some physical play as well. He can't drag this roster on his back.

LOL. By no means is he a superstar, and I think we kind of expect that. How about hold people accountable like a leader does. I'm tired of seeing the same guys make the same mistakes, again and again and again. I.E Brayden Schenn. I "get" why Luke
has problems, he cant fix his "slow" But B.S. makes the same mistakes 2,3 4 times a game.

Does the PP have ANY other plays besides set up, get someone in the left circle and thread a pass to the guy in the left circle? Everyone can see that coming.

And how about "bad clears" how hard is it , relatively speaking, to clear the puck? You dont have to be a skill guy to do that you just have to be aware of your surroundings and the game situation.

Last year would have been the time to move Mason with teams like buffalo and Edmonton wanting goalies. I think Anaheim would be a good trade partner. If you can get fowler. I would love to get Gibson. I think he is real deal. This team is just a bad mix. Can wait for some of these contracts to be gone.

This is where the rubber meets the road. If you're going to be slower, be skilled and have a hi hockey IQ; smaller, be faster and skilled; and so on and so forth as you described. They currently have a hideous combination of lack of size, speed and skill in way too many players. This is the legacy of Hexy's predecessor.

Killing penalties this season, too. There was a slap fight about Giroux a few days ago, and it is frustrating that 22 other guys who get paychecks are Giroux's responsibility, when he plays poorly or makes a mistake then he is held to a higher standard than the other 22 guys who get paychecks, but when he does play well, that is what he is supposed to do

At some point, it has to be said that no player in the NHL was a leader or consistently great when they don't have the horses around them

Carey Price was openly mocked in Montreal when they were losing a few years back, people wanted Jaroslav Halak to play. Next thing you know, Subban and Max Patches become beasts, Price is winning Hart and Vezinas, and nobody remembers Halak even played in Montreal

I'm actually real sick of "trying" a player out of their natural position.

So you think that Steve Mason is the equivalent of Peter Sidorkiewicz (had to look that up, came within 1 letter of spelling it right) and that guys like Schenn, Simmonds, and Couturier are the equivalents of Jamie Baker, Sylvain Turgeon, and Bob Kudelski?

Well let's just say that they'd definitely be one of the front runners for Matthews, and a top 3 pick would very much be in reach.

Would struggle to score even more so than now and can't defend.
