If the Ducks could actually land him it would be sweet retribution for that Justin Schultz garbage. Although, just watching Justin Schultz be Justin Schultz is retribution enough.

Eklund definitely seems to think he'll be able to sign with any team he wants in April.

He will be.... That will be April 2016, after the 2015-16 season has ended.

From Article 8.6 of the CBA:

If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student at the time
of his selection in the Entry Draft, or becomes a bona fide college student
prior to the first June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, and does
not remain a bona fide college student through the graduation of his
college class, his drafting Club shall retain exclusive rights for the
negotiation of his services until the later of: (a) the fourth June 1 following
his selection in the Entry Draft, or (b) thirty (30) days after NHL Central
Registry receives notice that the Player is no longer a bona fide college
student; provided that if the Player ceases to be a bona fide college student
on or after January 1 of an academic year and the Player: (1) is in his
fourth year of college and has commenced his fourth year of NCAA
eligibility, or (2) is in his fourth year of college and is scheduled to
graduate from college at the end of his fourth year, then in the
circumstances described in (1) or (2), the Club shall retain the exclusive
right of negotiation for such Player's services through and including the
August 15 following the date on which he ceases to be a bona fide college
student. The Club need not make a Bona Fide Offer to such Player to
retain such rights.

According to the CBA, it appears that Nashville has until August 15th, 2016 to sign Vesey.

Well, I dunno. All the other kids who have done the 4 year to FA route have been able to sign somewhere at the beginning of the summer. Example, Kevin Hayes last year.

I think the difference is that Vesey plans on graduating from Harvard (supposedly the sole reason he hasn't turned pro already).

Unless I'm interpreting the CBA incorrectly, Vesey graduating from Harvard would be a different scenario than those of Hayes & Schultz, who did not graduate from their respective schools. When a player "de-registers" from college, the team who drafted him has 30 days for the player to sign a contract. If the player graduates & receives his degree, it appears that the team has until August 15 to sign him.

Hayes played four years at BC. He signed with the Rangers on Aug 20, 2014.

Schultz did de-register from Wisconsin after three seasons and signed with Edmonton on June 30, 2012.

Vesey will have played all four years at Harvard. From all indications, Aug 15 would be the day he can sign (with a team other than the Preds) as a free agent.

Reilly....definitely a loophole the league needs to fix next CBA. College kids, if they don't like where they were drafted, can choose where they want to go after their four years in college.... Ridiculous!!

Well if the kid wants to play and play top line minutes, PP, SH and maybe even some in time in net then there is no better place to play then my Devils ...as long as he likes losing
- Gambi99
The only way someone signs with the Devils is if it's between them and the KHL... Who would want to play in that s@&$hole!!!!

I was under the impression that Nashville has until August 2016 to sign Vesey. If he wants to play for an NHL team in the 2015 - 2016 season, it will have to be with Nashville. Otherwise, he can sign with any team for the 2016 - 2017 season.

Am I wrong here?

- ProudestMonkey

No, but if he hasn't signed by now, he's not going to. Just accept it!!! Nashville, like Montreal, is where forwards go to die!!
