I think the rule is that if you play 40 NHL games in a season it will count as a year toward unrestricted free agency.

Ahh, so we could see them in spot duty here and there.

Agree on Ghost. He's going to make mistakes, but they'll be fun mistakes to watch him make.
- jmatchett383

The mistake he makes here that leads to the Crunch's 4th goal doesn't seem all that fun.

The PP assist was nice, though.

That's what I meant. The mistakes themselves won't be fun, but the style of play that leads to those mistakes, on the whole, will be fun to watch.

Here's hoping that Gudas performs a blood eagle of Thornton tonight.

Also, The Last Kingdom is a fantastic show.

In the end, I'm just happy hockey is back. I always viewed this year as a stepping stone to the next couple of seasons. All I want for the next couple of years, is to see one or two of the kids make the jump. It's fun watching you talent develop in front of you. No sense in stressing about the past mistakes. They are here now. They will be gone soon. That is all.
- funmaster18

I agree there is no point stressing about Lecavalier, Umberger, MacDonald, Schenn, and Gagner. They are going nowhere until the very end of their contracts or they are bought out. It's the other players I am more interested about with value: Simmonds, Read, B.Schenn, Raffl. A decision needs to be made on these guys soon. If they are going to be moved, this is the year to do it. And I put Simmonds in that group because he is by far the biggest trade chip the team has that is replaceable down the line. He also plays a position, power forward, that is known to just fall off the cliff production wise at some point often unexpectedly.

Speaking of futility, anyone else see where Sid Crosby has 0 shots on goal through 2 games?

We heard the same things about Hartnell, and it really felt like we missed something after he left and he went on to have a good year. If we trade anyone, we just better have a damn good replacement or return on the trade. No more Hartnell for Umberger type trades.

kessel has sucked the remaining talent right out of the team. Did I see they lost to the Yotes?

One thing I find interesting is that even though the season has just started, the prospects and future continues to dominate the conversation. I personally haven't given up on this season yet. They've played two games, and we saw one game where they played a strong structured team game, and another where it fell apart. That can happen when you get in a 4-0 hole in the blink of an eye. Mason having a family issue might explain how bad he was, he had zero focus. Looking forward to tonight's game.

Simmonds also had a bad start to 13-14 before roaring back and scoring 60 points. It's way too early to seriously talk about trading him. You could hold on to him till 2018 and still get really good value in a trade thanks to the contract he's on.

It's basically Vikings set about 50 years later, telling the story of Wessex defending itself from the Great Heathen Army. So, basically, it's Vikings told from the English side.

they need a strong start to get anywhere this season. They'd better get it together quick.

Hartnell Extension was just a bad move for us. Too much money and term imo. Simmonds has an extremely favorable contract at a still relatively young age. I see no reason to deal him without an adequate replacement. Whose your power forward ? Umberger ? How soft would our top 9 be without simmonds ? Charmin soft ?

Maybe you stumble upon a guy like puljujarvi in the draft who plays simmonds role at a higher level. But until than no thanks.

I don't believe this doomed season. But I also am not seeing signs that we are anywhere near sniffing the playoffs. There's 80 games left and we are not in last place, the penguins are.

I agree. I'm looking at tonight as a very important game. This could snow ball in a hurry into a prolonged losing streak.

I think it clearly dominates the conversation because it's such a bright spot for an organization that has sorely lacked at for so long. Coupled with some struggles the last couple of years, it's what is easiest to look at.

I also haven't given up on this season. I'm excited for the year and to see how the team responds to Hakstol in the long term and how he deals with certain things like discipline, adversity, etc.

Home opener tonight, let's get some revenge!

It's about the return. You don't give Simmonds away. But everything is timing. The return for Hartnell stunk because of his contract and he was signed until age 37. Simmonds is signed to an excellent contract only taking him to age 30. It would be foolish to resign him after that even if his production maintains because after 30 is a crapshoot for power forwards with more negative then positives. So why not move him since in all likelihood the Flyers won't be good again until the very last year of his contract and his value is the highest now?

Who replaces him? Umberger ? He's a 25+ goal scoring power forward.

BBC America (Channel 1225 for me) Saturdays at 10PM>

Funny thing is, it just debuted this past weekend, but I was only able to watch Episode 2 on demand last night. So, I basically watched a show a week early and had to try to catch up to what happened the previous episode. Hopefully I can watch Episode 1 tonight.
