Schenn Couts Simmonds line must score. I see the offensive pressure as being squarely on them this season. I think the Read Laughton Umberger line can definitely shoulder much of the defensive load, but that second line has got to score goals.
- ManCity

Seems odd that read is the LW and umberger the RW? I thought read prefers the right side and umberger could go anywhere

I guess they want the speed down the left side

I wonder how long Medvedev stays on that 3rd pairing.

Yeah good call. I think they'll need 20+ minutes out of him every night. Decent speed and real smooth stride.

There has never been a Schenn, Simmonds and Couturier line.
- SuperSchennBros

So? They both play well with him. In fact every forward who played regularly with Couturier last season had better stats with him than without him.

It has never been tried before, so it can't possibly work, right? right?

He's going to play a lot of minutes regardless, because the plan is for him to be involved both on PK unit and PP2.

Fortunately, for the rest of the Flyers fans, the team, and Couturier himself... no one who actually makes decisions in the Flyers organization gives half a turd what you are or arent ready for.
- Doc_Sarcasm

I will tell you that Cooter certainly looked like much more than a 3rd line centre at the world championships last spring. Saw that in the right circumstances, he has some very good O skill..

Do you know who the main forward penalty killers will be based on watching the practices?

Lets hope he fits in well, and lets hope that the 2nd PP unit is improved this year, with scoring being at a premium in today's NHL, the Flyers are going to need all the goals they can get, and they're going to need to do a better job of minimizing chances in their own zone. They have to limit the number of failed breakouts coming out of their end.

We hopefully don't ever have to see Rino naked and riding that wrecking ball again, so that's good.

found this interesting nuance to the new coach's challenge rule on mckenzie's tsn piece, which i didn't know:

As long as a team is still in possession of its timeout, a coach may "challenge" a goal call that he feels was scored as a result of an uncalled offside. If, however, the puck clears the zone after the offside but before the goal is scored, the goal cannot be challenged.

iow, the goal must occur with puck possession remaining inside the zone on the missed offside call in question. this favor's the flyers D, because they can't clear.

Schenn and Simmonds have been centered by Vincent Lecavalier and Danny Briere with different results simply because they are different players, as is Sean Couturier. Sean Couturier has to prove he can bring his offensive game. Wayne Simmonds was off and on Couturier's wing due to lack of consistency.

Like I said, a Schenn, Simmonds and Couturier line has never been tried. Schenn and Simmonds aren't going to automatically become solid two way players like Matt Read just because they're simply paired with Couturier. They need to find that area of their games within themselves. As does Couturier with his offense.

After watching the small sampling of preseason games, I feel tentatively comfortable in saying that Medvedev is our best and most complete defenseman, at least at even strength. I don't doubt that he could eat up top pairing level even strength minutes in addition to his special teams' duties. It's not like anyone else seems equipped for it.

Were the right circumstances matching up against the 4th lines of Belarus, Switzerland, Austria?

I think as far as the job they do in their own end. Nick Schultz is head and shoulders better than the rest. Its very possible medvedev could wind up being the best two way guy

I think he has the ability but when your playing with the best Canada has to offer, against average to good competition, it makes things easier
