Has there been any kind of statement from the league on how they are dealing with Richards' cap hit?

Are the Kings able to operate as if his contract has been terminated?

Just seems strange that there is no chatter about this.

Yes, the league signed off on Richards' termination back in June. The Kings are allowed to operate as if his contract has been terminated. Right now, the only affect to the cap is the recapture penalty of $1.3M as if Richards had retired.

The NHLPA filed a grievance against that decision and requested an expedited hearing. Then Richards got criminal charges filed against him for his incident at the border. There hasn't been a hearing scheduled for the grievance, and Richards has yet to enter a plea in his criminal case. My guess is that the hearing is on hold pending resolution of the criminal charges. Until resolved, the Kings will continue to be allowed to operate with only $1.3M in cap recapture charges for Mike Richards.

given the news on kassian entering stage 2 of the substance abuse program, i wonder if any light will be shed on richards, which may better explain why DL would terminate his contract. there has to be far more to the story than just the border incident in isolation.

actually forget what i said above:

i wonder if the cap recapture penalties will still apply. perhaps no if he ends up signing with another team once a settlement is reached, since he's not "retired" at that point.

The NHL Substanse Abuse program is confidential. The only time that there are any public announcements is if there is a change in a player's roster eligibility (i.e. suspension due to violation). Since Richards is not currently under contract with any team, it is unlikely that we'll hear any news.

Yeah, I'm curious as to what's going on myself. I know these decisions can take awhile but I'm very impatient and I would like an answer asap. Good or bad

Yes...you're the only one that's allowed to make comments like that, right?

Loosen up a little.

thanks,
good reading beyond the Richards news on new rules.
The coaches challenge will be interesting when used to challenge goalie interference that wasn't called during a goal. There has always been a lot of grey area in front of net, as far as that goes. Should be a lot of ranting after goals are overturned.

I honestly don't think much will change with the challenge on goaltender interference. Goalie interference is incredibly subjective. Two people might watch the same play over and over again, and one will claim interference while the other says good goal. Unless it's a black and white call (offsides, puck over glass, etc.), I think the refs stick with their original judgement 90% of the time.

I agree, I'm thinking that is probably not the best place to allow a challenge. What about delay of game and high sticking?. When a guy gets hammered and is bleeding, I think a second look is a good thing.

I'm fine with coaches challenges of major/match penalties, the so-called "mandatory" penalties (puck over glass, double-minor high stick, face-off violations for gloving the puck, etc), and boundary violations (offsides, puck hitting the mesh, too many men on the ice, etc.). I don't think that anything subjective should be subject to coaches challenge.

you make good sense....a coaches challenge on goalie interference will at least provide some entertainment on the goals that are overturned
