If it was mid season, I'd agree for sure. But Lehner doesn't know the tendencies of the guys in front of him yet, they don't know his tendencies, and other than some preseason games, he hasn't played a game since February. Asking him to do something like that yesterday is a bit much.

fair point, I guess I just expect more out of him when playing a bona fide ahl team.

I'd be more concerned with those AHLers making it past at least 4 NHLers and getting down there and scoring.

Agreed. Make no mistake, I don't expect them to be a playoff team and posted as such over the summer. Just a risky move to trade for Lenner and make him the #1.
- mhp

Yea no doubt. TM's a big risk taker, not all of them are going to work out. As long as he hits more than he misses. Like I could live with Lehner being a bust if Kane and O'Reilly lived up to expectations.

I still think Lehner can turn it around. Maybe not this year, considering the defence and recovering from injuries (and being out of shape) but i think once there's a playoff team in front of him his game will reach that next level.

I think we need to give credit where credit is due, because those AHLers were all over the place last night for the first 2 periods. Our guys looked like they were skating around with lead in their skates. It seemed like any time one of our guys got the puck there were 2 of their guys all over them.

As far as Lehner goes, there's 2 of those 5 goals I for sure would have liked him to get, but he had virtually 0 support in front of him. The ones that they got in off rebounds aren't on him, IMO. Your defense needs to be there helping to clean those up or taking the man nearby out of the play so they can't put it in while the goalie is out of position. Instead, what we saw was all of our guys just standing around like they had no clue what was going on.

I am more concerned about the D then Lehner

I think im more worried that we will lose every single game johnson starts. At least acquiring a competent goalie doesnt have to cost too much (regardless of what we paid for lehner). was hoping that we wouldnt have to use assets from the promising forward ranks to fix the defense. Guess we'll see.

Oleksiak could have been a good waiver pick up but it sounds like the stars are going to carry 8 d-men

I like the fact that Murray is an aggressive GM. I got a feeling he isn't particularly pleased with certain things and it wouldn't surprise me if he makes a waiver claim or makes a trade before Thursday.

And it looks like the Habs won't waive Tinordi and risk losing him.

At that point i'd say go big (yandle) or go home (McCabe). I really don't see the need to add another Carlo/Donovan type as it doesn't really solve anything.

He looked pretty bad in some of the other games. I just want the next move to be a permanent solution not some band-aid.

Since when do Sabres game replays get blacked out on NHL network?

But on a serious note, non of these options are clear upgrades over what we have. I think it's best to bet on the guys we have. If either are a train wreck by January, then it's time to start thinking goalie moves. But for now we need to see what we have in Lehner and Johsnon.

Give Lehner a legit run as a starter.
Sabres goalies were beyond brutal in the preseason last year too. Rounded into form just fine.

Lehner needs to be more than fine. He needs to eventually be a top 5-10 goalie

Exactly, people are too ready to run players out of town. Everyone is so worried about overpaying for the Lehner trade, but if you don't even give him a chance you lose the trade 100%.
