If we didn't use that 1st rounder to get Lehner, it would have been part of the O'Reilly deal. So I would stop dwelling on it and just move on.

That's far from a sure thing. The 31st pick didn't make or break that deal...be real

Realistically i think pick 21 was going to be a goalie regardless. I would have liked Konecny as well but i don't think he would've been high up on their list had they kept the pick.

I'm plenty real. If we hadn't moved the 1st rounder to get Lehner, Sakic would have wanted that instead of 31. If you don't think so, maybe you're the one that needs to get real.

I think the goalie was going to be Lehner regardless, not necessarily the pick.

I don't think it mattered that much. They moved the 31st pick anyways.

They were moving O'Reilly. Murray wanted O'Reilly. The deal would have happened with no picks. Murray would have just given him another player or prospect.

Murray goes all in on players he likes. I wish one of them was Konecny. That's all

The real point here is we weren't going to be using either of those picks. Doesn't matter if it was Lehner that we traded for or another goalie. Whatever pick was used for goalie, the other one was going to be used for O'Reilly.

I'll take a skilled forward prospect over a goalie any day.

Philly traded up from the 2nd round for him. We could have used either pick. It's obviously early, but he looks like a stud.

I think it's odd how people are ok with the notion that Murray is just going to throw picks around no matter if it was 21 or 31, as if there is no difference.
Brendan Guhle was a 2nd rounder and he looks excellent. Picks matter

I know picks matter. But I think Murray saw this offseason as the time to really put his stamp on this team. I don't think you see him as aggressive in the future. He threw those picks around because he could afford to. It's not like we had no other picks in the draft. He didn't put us in a bad position like Pittsburgh was in with very few picks in this draft.

There was no way that with the amount of picks/prospects we've amassed over the past few years to keep all of these guys in the first place. There's only 50 contracts allowed per team between the NHL club, AHL club and guys that are signed and playing Jr or in Eur still. At some point you run out of contracts to offer and guys get to walk for nothing.

I'd rather trade the quantity for quality, and I feel like Murray did that. Lehner is definitely a bit of a wild card, but I'm no expert, so I'll leave that to them to determine.

I just hope he's right. We will be good regardless, but whether we end up being a cup team within 2-4 years is another story

Travis Konecny could end up being the steal of the 15 draft.

I really wish we had him instead of Lehner

- sbroads24

Agree, I wanted the Sabres to get him

Nothing could have guaranteed that though. This team would have been good either way, but hopefully these moves have solidified that more. The Lehner trade is the one that's most interesting because, like I said before, it's the biggest wildcard. The rest of the guys that were traded for have more of a resume and are more "known" if you will. I think Kane has upside from what he's done up to this point in his career and O'Reilly has been pretty consistent his entire career. Lehner is just coming into his own. Any of the other guys that were available would have been able to walk a lot sooner, so you run the risk of having to replace them right as the team is starting to really make the push.

I'm just super excited that the season is about to start. It's been a long offseason and there's a lot of anticipation surrounding it because of all the moves. I'm ready to watch some real hockey this year.

Girl settled. (Like they all do)
Case will hit grand jury.
Both sides will suddenly forget details.
Case is dropped, lack of evidence.
Carry on Kaner.
