I would argue Quick is average
- PhillySportsGuy

Mike Quick is horrible, the only reason he is on the broadcast is to dumb it down for the neanderthal type listener base

Giroux got old, their best defensemen is 20, their goaltending was awful this year, their "depth" is overrated and their coach isn't very good.
- PhillySportsGuy

once he got paid he decided not to be good anymore. sweet deal

Might have a case there. Elite stats in one of their Cup wins. I think it was the first one.

Alright I am willing to accept that with an elite dman(top 5) and elite coaching staff/system of play you can overcome the lack of an elite goalie to win.

Seems like you need to full-fill at least 2 of the 3.

Guys Detroit used weren't great either. Fleury was solid, but not elite.

He's not as bad as his numbers would indicate. You probably can't pencil him in as a good 1C anymore though. Flyers really need to come up the heir apparent to Giroux.

Has any team in the salary cap era ever won a Cup without both a top 10 center and top 10 Dman?

Yeah, but he still has value. He's still a top 6 guy and arguably the best PP forward in hockey. That makes him a $6M player. So they eat $2M per year and can write it off as "leadership"

I guess it depends on how you define a top 10 centre? Strictly points or other factors as well?

Bergeron and Krejci probably weren't considered top 10 centres when Boston won. Savard was their #1 before he was brain stew.

But again they had the system, the goalie and the dman.

bergeron wasn't considered a top 10 center because everyone is an idiot. toews was considered the best in the league at the time by some people and he's never been as good as bergeron overall.

Ty

Sports fans can be fickle. Krejci was criminally underrated during that time too. Led the playoffs in scoring twice and that entire collapse against Philly in 2010 was kicked off by his injury.

I still remember texting Crims about my concerns when it was 3-1.

Bergeron is and was every bit an elite 1C. Easily one of the best forwards in hockey.

the fact that that sorrow could only be harvested for about 11 months is still one of the most unbe(frank)able™ personal sports events for me of all time

it could have yielded plentiful bounties of lush, delicious sorrow for years, even decades

Gotta admit it was nice having that Roenick goal against the Leafs for so long
