Everyone says MLSE always sells hope to Leafs Nation and they buy it up. The truth is Leafs Nation buys up WHATEVER (frank)ing story MLSE puts out and they run with it with their eyes closed. Unless you're from like.... Pickering... then every year could be "the" year.

I'm asking honestly... not sarcastically ... did someone actually say that this year could be the year?

At this time of year they ALWAYS have a chance, but when November rolls around, that chance is no longer there.

I'm guessing that MLSEL management has better plans, but Leafs Nation really has to stop with this narrative that the road to Leafy success is:

1. Sign garbage players to 1-year, $1.5 million dollar contracts (when no other teams wanted them)

2. Flip them at the trade deadline for really high picks

3. Draft impact players who will help the team in the next 2 years.

I agree you can't do this in perpetuity ... but for a couple of years its cheap and easy way to build a bit of depth options. I particularly like when you find a guy like Winnik who really did seem to care.. and certainly put an effort out 99% of the time.

But MLSE can't keep doing this for the next five years - at least on a this scale - a couple of guys at a time would be fine.

I think the idea with this model for last year and the next couple is simply to have the majority of our organizational depth be our own drafted players (or guys brought in prior to being NHLers anywhere else). It's a completely 180 from the failed methodologies of years past

It has just as much, if not more to do with keeping the kids in the system. Without the 6 or 7 stop gaps they picked up guys like Nylander and Brown would be in the top 9.

A few extra depth draft picks are nice, but developing talent the right way is worth so much more.

no doubt... but at some point those "own drafted players" need to be given the opportunity for real shot at a roster spot.

I'm not making the case for Josh Leivo... just using him as an example. It could be argued, he like Stu Percy have done enough to earn a "good long look". But with the signings of guys like Arcobello, P-A Parenteau and Hunwick you effectively block up the spots.

I'd really hate to think the Shanahan, Hunter, Dubas and now Babcock and Lamorello would simply right those guys off because they were drafted by a previous regime. While they may not be "tier 1" prospects... Percy sure didn't look bad in his real few games.

absolutely ... I just meant that they can't keep doing the "add 6 or 7" stop gaps every year...
