The Yandle thing is funny. Top 5 defenseman in the league when on the Yotes. Imagine all the good things he would do a talented contender where he plays with all world players is what Tanner used to say. Well yea he came to a contender with better players than the Yotes and his production got worse in every single way. - rangerdanger94
He was a big fish in a little pond out there, so he HAD to be the offensive catalyst at whatever the cost (i.e. playing defense). On a "contending" team, they split the workload, so he levels out a bit more. I'm not saying he's a bad defenseman (he's no worse than anything the Flyers have) but he was, to me, way overhyped.
Using analytics for one season isn't valid to judge in the first place. Also not sure where the idea comes from that Pittsburgh is the first team, or even the most reliant, on the underlying numbers for roster construction. Plenty of other GMs use them too. - jfkst1
I'll agree on this. If we want to look at the effect of analytics to team success, shouldn't Chicago be the measuring stick?

It's amazing that some bloggers on here use corsi on a GAME BY GAME basis to describe whether a player had a good game or a bad game during the regular season.

Do you think it was a system thing? Then again, there was probably a reason he was an Olympic snub, but then again he definitely should have made it over Orpik, but then again Bylsma...

Only reason he was overhyped was because of James Tanner. This dude has managed to make Sam (frank)ing Gagner overhyped. Hell hes managed to make one of the top 15 defensemen in the league in OEL overhyped because he attaches such high artificial praise to him every single damn day for months and months.
Outside of Tanner, I think everyone knows how good Yandle is. He's one of the better offensive defensemen in the league. Not at Letang, Karlsson, or Subban's level, but he's a tier below them. He's a skater and a passer more than a shooter. He's solid defensively but has his issues in his own zone.

That's because there are a lot fewer factors to consider in assessing players for a single game than a whole team over the course of a year.

I think it was a few things. First, he has no chemistry with everyone. The passes Yandle makes on the PP and at ES too are so unexpected that no forward is ready for them. I think that will improve with time and his assists total will begin racking up like it did in Arizona.
second i think it has to do with his role. He's playing less ice time here, having shorter shifts, and is below McDonagh on the depth chart when it comes to offensive zone starts.
Third, he was injured. He has a sprained MCL which is why he was removed almost altogether from the PP in the playoffs despite that being the main reason he was brought here.

I read blogs where Yakupov was on the ice for 4 shots for and 1 shot against and the blogger saying that the oilers had possession of the puck for 80% of Yakupov's TOI because of those stats

No, there was a lot of hype on him outside of this site. Like you said, he's an A-/B+ offensive defenseman who is adequate/slightly below average defensively.
OEL, last year, deserved a Norris nod. He's the elite guy on that team, and would be much more hyped were he on the East Coast.

Meh I'd argue that Yandle is at a minimum average defensively. But what do I know? I think Girardi is a good defensive player too and he's apparently an ECHLer based on his advanced stats.

Girardi's defense is somewhere between the advanced stats assessment (Andrew MacDonald level) and the general Rangers fan base level (elite). He's a good shutdown defender. Any team would improve by adding him to their top-4.

Also, I apologize if my posts are coming off as extra snarky today as opposed to my usual level of snarkiness. I just think that, sometimes, people will come up with new ways of compiling specific data simply to prove their current point.
i.e. Kunitz put up 18 points in 20 games 8 years and one abdominal surgery ago, so we can expect around 74 points from him this year. - jmatchett383

Ah, didn't make the connection. I actually haven't watched that in a while.
Side story: My boss (R&D) is in charge of naming our projects, and is a big B.C. fan. One project is Project Bubba Ho-Tep and the other is Project Guan Di (My Name is Bruce).

can you create a chart to describe it for me? - ChrisMS
Not so good with charts.
Bruce Campbell plays bumhole B-movie actor Bruce Campbell. A young fan of his kidnaps him to his hometown of Gold Lick to fight the real-life Chinese God of War (and tofu), Guan Di. After thinking it's all a joke and a birthday present, our hero runs away, only to find it within himself to man up and help. Bruce Campbell described it as his scariest movie, saying, "This could actually be my life."
its interesting... looking around the thread is being dominated by rags and fluffers fans. Can we elect Trump to build a wall or somethin round these here parts?

But then how would West Virginia, Ohio, and Maryland get their crystal meth?
I would direct you to the "Visit Cleveland Town" videos, but I don't have the heart for someone who actually lives in Ohio. But yo, Athens is the bomb!
