I can't see us coming anywhere near a playoff spot without a massive upgrade to the defense
- MattFreaknEllis

The East is weak.

I see them making 2 moves like the Islanders did last year right before the season starts.

The Islanders who were/are on the up and up wanted zero to do with Moulson going forward. He was moved off of JT's line and as a result became an asset not worth keeping.

Just saying.

- dadeadhead

I think the Isles got rid of him because they were "upgrading" him to Vanek for their playoff push

If they can pull of what the isles did (or at least equivelant talent wise) i'll jump on the playoff bandwagon. Tall order though.

They moved him off JT's line which led him to being much less effective(AKA replaceable).

Rumor he wanted 7 mil a year

They thought they could get Vanek to sign for that kind of money.

They had an internal cap and couldn't afford to keep Moulson and Vanek on that team during that season.

Moulson was a UFA and Darcy knew he could move him at the deadline for more future assets(Which Murray ultimately did), he wasn't the key piece in the deal.

Not sure what went down with the Islanders I didn't follow that situation very closely. On a good team, he's a solid complimentary player especially when given a good center. I think he is important for OUR team going forward, regardless of his role with the Isles. You think he's third line, I think he's a second liner. If he is a third line forward, then yes I agree he won't be as useful for us

I said in a year or 2 he'll be a 3rd liner on this team.

If we weren't 2 top rw's short he'd be the 3rd best option on the left side behind Kane and Ennis.

A general comment on all the Moulson talk: why do so many seem to still be in the mindset of what a 3rd line player 'should' be?

To me, those days are fading fast if not gone all together.

The need for a checking line is a thing of the past.

You need 3 full lines that are strong at possession and are strong all over the ice.

That means scoring as well.

Ideally you'd like your 4th line to be strong all over the ice and at posession while being able to chip in from time to time on offense.

This. I agree wholeheartedly. A guy who "hits" and not much else is generally not a very good player since you can only accumulate hits while chasing the puck

Yes, however guys who play a 3rd line role but get paid like a 2nd liner seem to always find their way out the door sooner than later.

Matt Moulson is still the 3rd highest paid forward on this team. Realistically he's the 8th or 9th best forward on a cup team.

Him on a 5 year deal until he's 36 is bad cap management. Period

Everyone is just assuming he's going to be bad in 2 years. he could play the justin williams role on the kings..Role scorer.
Every post is negative about something..you never know some players could surprise people

You can already see his skills starting to erode though.

have to wonder how much was there in the first place.

Underselling the Tavares effect, see Parenteau.

Idk the Last two years have been so bad it's hard to judge a player that was apart of it..If he bombs this year then sure. But he had 41 points on the worst offense in the league, I wouldn't be disappointed if he puts up 50 which is very possible. I hear your point just saying he could excel this year from last

Agreed Kong . Pretty much the difference between the lines is the amount of ice time. I would rather have 3 lines that score and score often. Some will have better nights vs different teams. We have seen that more than often in the past.
