wait im confused. Is coots 2nd or 3rd line center? I would have thought coots would be 3rd line behind schenn. Im prolly in the minority here but I want to see what b schenn can do at center for a prolonged period of time with decent linemates and not ones that get moved all over the place. Coots hasnt so far shown anything more then a 3rd line center at this juncture and would be a reach right now to put him at the 2nd center. I still would love a high quality winger on the top line but as of right now I would go with rafl/gag,g,vor then gag/rafl,b schenn, simmonds then umberger(ugh),coots, read then a 4th line of who knows, laughton, who knows . Point is the new nhl all four lines roll out onto the ice. I dont think laughton playing 4th line minutes mixed in with pk time and such would hurt his development. I could be wrong. Im sure ill get slaughtered for this post.Im ready!

Edit: or the new coach can put vinny at 3rd line center and I would be completely lost and would have to do soul searching and become a philadelphia soul fan. Im not even sure what sport they play!!!!!!!!!!!!!

14/15 NHL season Even strength points.

B. Schenn 28
Couturier 29

13/14 NHL season Even strength points

B. Schenn 32
Couturier 31

Now if he we look at the situations each player plays in, and how conducive to producing offensively at ES, Schenn was in much better situations.

However, in the first seaon in gm mode I traded coots and a 3rd round pick to the aves for the first overall and got mcdavid. I cannot understand why the flyers wouldnt make that same move at the draft. Im a gm god!!!!

Despres is a young player, just getting better. Lovejoy is pretty much what he is at this point, a career 5-6 bubble guy
- Jsaquella

You're right, that trade crippled the team and is the reason they lost. They'll have total egg on their face when Despres wins 17 Norris Trophies.

tbd if it is a Coburn like trade. zhitnik was still a good top 4 dman at the time. lovejoy wasn't/isn't.

despres played over 20 minutes a night in the playoffs.. don't know many bottom pairing #6 guys who do that in in the playoffs.

- rinaldo

He was also 5th in TOI on the team. Anaheim spread out their ATOI amongst defensemen more than most teams. Also, over a short sample size of 16 games, playing 34 minutes in a Triple OT game and 27 minutes in a Double OT game (again, 5th most TOI amongst defenders) in both games is going to make your ATOI skyrocket.

But yeah, terrible, crippling trade for Pittsburgh. They'll never win a game ever again.

I wonder how many points from each in EN opportunities contribute to those totals. Maybe not much.

This team needs skill and speed on the wing very badly either way. From what Hexy has said this summer he made it seem like schenn would be starting out at center

I would have too, but it wasn't some horrible trade like Zhitnik for Coburn. They both played well for Anaheim, as so would any of our defensemen as a #6 in that system. Despres is a very nice bottom-pair defender. Some people acted like it set Pittsburgh back a decade.
- jmatchett383

Despres can be a #4 and is seven years younger.

It was a horrible trade.

I don't think anything will be off the table regarding lines.

The only line I see that could be set is the 4th line.

White/Vandevelde - Bellemare - Umberger

Which is a good fourth line that is pretty good defensively. Be nice if they could contribute to the team like when Boston has Thorton - Campbell - Paille.

I just thought it was weird. I don't know if it is horrible yet until we see what Despres does this year. But just seems weird to make that trade and then let Erhoff and Martin leave. I know they have some talent in Poulit and Letang. I just think it was a short sighted trade

With a new coach who knows. I wouldn't rule anything out. Flyers still need to add some skill, quickness and speed to the forward corps moving forward.

I still see a move being made before the season. With all the veteran defensman on the roster I have to think Hextall is waiting for a good team to lose a top 4 and then try to make a deal to get some forward help.

I keep thinking of Columbus. They want Erhoff yet he hasn't signed. They want defenders. If they got desperate would you move Streit or Schenn there and try to get back someone like Rychel. That would be my thinking. Try to wait out camp and preseason and see what team need defenders.

I think the Flyers are going to wait on that. Gudas is comong off a serious knee injury. Last year the Flyers carried 8 defenseman. Injuries happen. I would not move either player until the season plays out.

Be curious to get Bills thoughts but any unsigned guys you might invite in for a PTO? Here are some for me:

Erik Cole - LW
Tomas Flieshman - LW
Scottie Upshall - LW

I think that too, unless the right deal comes along.

I just think they are waiting it out until a team who is maybe expected to make the playoffs has an injury to a top 4 guys and need a solid replacement.

What if the Flyers remain solidly in the playoff hint throughout the season?
