All major league players must pass through waivers in order to be traded. Just about all players make it on to waivers. If the Phillies put Franco on waivers, another team will claim him. The Phillies will have the option of making a deal with the team that claimed him, letting the other team have him or taking him off waivers and retaining him.

This is the silliest rule in sports to me (okay, hybrid icing may have it beat). If you put a player on waivers, he should be free game. They could just do away with this clause and save everyone a lot of trouble. If you're interested in a player, call up the GM and ask if he's really available.

I think the point is after the first deadline you don't necessarily get to select your trade partner.

Until proven otherwise, to me Gudas is simply a capable, affordable 3rd pair physical defenseman. Nothing wrong with that, but he's going to have to prove that he can be more than that.

I remember when Luke Schenn was only rumoured to be traded here for JvR and then it happened. Luke was compared to by many to Shea Weber. Those same people will deny it now but it seems to me by some right now, Radko Gudas is poised to be an all situations top 4 including the Power Play.

I'm wondering the over/under on 5 minute majors on dangerous hits for the season.

Well, that's at least a good explanation. I still think it's poorly put. To me, "waivers" are where you put players that you intend to "waive." The should call it "danglers" or "potential tradeable player declarations", something more fitting.

Who exactly compared Luke Schenn to Shea Weber, aside from the fact that they are human and right-handed?

so then it's just the terminology that boils your buttons

on that note I would like to raise issue with having two deadlines. It's not a deadline if you can still trade after that. They should call the first deadline a "bazooble", and only have the one deadline at the end of August.

I fully endorse the bazooble.

No, I didn't realize the intent was to keep the top dogs from poaching. But since that is the case, then yes, the terminology needs to be called into question.

I truly hope one day we'll hear about a team pulling a player off danglers when they couldn't make a trade work after the bazooble.

(I actually had a beef with this "deadline" thing for a while now, so I'm not just saying it to spite you)

(I can still spite you if you want tho)

No one can compare to Shea Weber. Hell, no one can compare to his beard. There is no way that I would have ever said anything remotely close to that.

It needs to be changed and I think it will eventually. The reasoning for the second deadline was to give teams a little more time to hang in the race. Before 1987, only 4 teams made the playoffs. There were really only 6-7 teams truly in playoff contention, so there was a much better chance of finding a trade partner back then.

Now, 10 teams make it. A strict deadline of August 15 seems reasonable

Just giving you the vibe of the room the offseason that Luke Schenn landed here.

Luke Schenn the next big thing when he got here. Radko Gudas, Oliver Lauirdsen and Brandon Manning the next big things to replace him.

Somehow this sounds stupid to nobody.

Schenn will bring the element of physicality and a lot of questionable decision making and positioning. If the Carle detractors think he is a "turn over machine" wait until you get a load of this guy. I liked JVR and wanted him to have the chance to redeem himself this season. He had an injury plauged season, not a season of poor performance. I would have only advocated including JVR for Weber or Ryan.

Good Luck in TO JVR.

I will say that I do like Schenn, he has played ok for the most part and very well at times. But if he can not establish himself as a consistent 2nd pair Dman, I'd rather have Gudas for 2+ million less

IIRC, the mood was pretty dire when that trade went down and we found out it was 1-for-1.

I can tell you that I was one of the more optimistic people on here about Luke, but Shea Weber? Lol, common.

I beleive the term to describe it is revocable waivers, if I'm not mistaken.

This isn't selective memory. I'm not saying everyone had high hopes for Luke Schenn to be more then what he is offensively, I'm saying some did. This excitement for Gudas reminds me of the same excitement. I personally never thought the deal made sense because we just picked up Grossmann and needes to resign Carle.

My only real issue with the trade was that we didn't get more. If your giving up JvR for Luke Schenn, there has to be more. It has to be a Carter to Columbus type of deal or Richards to LA. Hartnell for Umberger thankfully wasn't one for one.

So nobody ever believed Oilver Lauirdsen was going to take Grossmann's place? Nobody ever believed Brandon Manning is better than Luke Schenn? Nobody believes right now that Radko Gudas will undoubtedly be the end of Luke Schenn?

I guess Flyers fans never get carried away. I'm telling you, there was an expectation of Luke he was never going to reach when he got here.
