Ah Foppa. Great ballsy move, but the foot injuries turned him from dominant star to distraction by the end of his time here as a NHLer.

It didn't help much that before his last season, Bob Clarke basically did nothing to improve the team, and in fact made it worse (Handzus for Kyle Calder, Mark Cullen, Nolan Baumgartner)

It's pretty impressive that Holmgren took a team that was dead last and turned them into an ECF team. Maybe they overachieved (or Montreal underachieved) a bit, but whatever other knocks you have on him, he did a great job that first year.

He had a very good start, unfortunately, he got to the point after the injury to Pronger where he was kind of caught. He was transitioning to the Giroux-Voracek-Simmonds forward core, and was hoping to have Pronger to anchor the defense for 4-5 more seasons.

When he went down, the doubling down and trading away more and more picks, and some of the questionable contracts left them in a rough spot. There was little in the system that could step in on a cheap ELC and teams started being more proactive to make sure their good young players would be locked up before they got to free agency.

I don't think he's incompetent, but he made some bad reads in free agency and that hurt. And while I have little doubt that the Flyers will be at or near the cap under Hextall, I don't think we're going to see a repeat of the huge contracts to fading players or the trading of picks for pending UFAs. Hextall is going to pay his stars, and core pieces and bring in depth players for cheap. He's going to use free agency as a secondary tool, not the primary one, to fill roster holes.

Agreed 100%. He had some blunders, but a lot of that was fallout from the Pronger injury. He was the key piece on the back end, and when he went down, Homer went into full band aid mode. Part of that falls on his unwillingness to address the blue line through thee draft, whether it be from poor picks or the absence of picks.

by the time the need to develop defensemen was made painfully obvious, he was in a squeeze where he had to bolster that pipeline while simultaneously helping the NHL blueline. It was a no win situation, albeit one he let himself get stuck in.

I never has the pleasure of watching Clarke play, aside from the alumni game, in person. Not all of us were there when Columbus found the new world.

Bobby Clarke will always be the best Flyers player unless the Flyers get a Gretzky/Lemieux/Orr type of player. He just will be. I wish I could have watched him play live, as I don't think videos do him justice.

Clarke was my favorite with Lindros and Hexy close 2 and 3
