Yeah, saying the team is best off w/ Coots at 3C right now is the same as condoning the punishing usage patterns and dead-stiff linemates that he had to endure last season.

Your post did not stipulate that the opinion you offered, only applied to right now. In fact you even discussed who is going to come along to relieve Couturier of those responsibilities, which is clearly considering the future, in the opinion.

In my view, if a coach is going to come in to a new team, and apply a structure, and style of play, and demand players play within that structure, then he very well can't say, well all except for L2. I think a team can certainly afford a less responsble, or moreso a less capable 2 way player, and carry an one way offensive player on a line, preferably a winger, not a center. Providing he produces offensively at a high level, and is a catalyst offensively. A player like a Danny Briere, or even better, a Patrick Kane. Otherwise a top team needs to be well balanced throughout the lineup, to maximize matchups, become a more difficult team to play against, and to share responsibilities, and not overly burden one player.

We will just have to disagree on this. Vinny will still get at least half the season in the lineup. If his contract was cheap and he could be sent to the minors....He would probably never play.
- GOA88

His cap hit doesn't preclude him being sent to the minors, his NMC does.

If Umberger is totally ineffective he could be waived to the AHL and replaced with a guy like Leier. But Vinny can't.

No, you're totally minconstruing the interview. There is nothing in the interview that states he was a genuine/nice guy, that's simply how you perceived it, which is wrong. In reality, what you fail to realize is that AMac is his father's son, and he is in fact not genuine due to him being an NHL tweener.

I like the fact that there is actual competition among younger players like Laughton and Cousins for NHL spots. The Flyers need more of this sort of thing.

I'd like to see coots play split between defensive specialist and offensive dynamo. I think it can be done, theoretically they could have some type of hybrid 2/3 line with read coots and schenn. Schenn isn't the best defensive player, that being said, he holds his own when he has to.
- benjichronic

If they go hybrid, not sure the left over pieces are enough to make a decent two-way L3 complement to Read/Coots/Schenn's L2.

So much would hinge on Simmer getting better defensively and Laughton coming into his own -- and maybe Hakstol having a willingness to move PEB up the lineup, too.

Because we know, as it stands, Gagner and Vinnyburger aren't really suited to seeing any hot two-way action, and the rest are green kids and replacement fodder.

Wild card could be Gagner... if he can play 1LW well, they might be able to cobble something decent together on L3 by bumping Raffl down there.

Looking at the CA/60 numbers for the 14 main forwards last season, it really stands out how bad Lecavalier was defensively. Him and Umberger are basically tied for last, but Vinny started in the OZ 38% of the time, and only 28.3% of the time in the DZ.

For RJ it was 28.2% in the OZ and 31.2% in the DZ.

Glad we have the CA/60 numbers to tell us that Lecavalier and Umberger were far and away the worst forwards on the team last year.

semin to the habs. 1 year.
- hammarby31

Looks like Semin will be in a Habs jersey.

Semin is on the back of his shirt.

Semin shoots! And it's corralled by the goalie.

What if he takes a shot and hits someone's face? "Semin shoots and...oh no I believe it hit Avery in the face..."

It's (frank)ing endless

I agree with your last couple of posts. A lot of Coots fan's may not like to hear this, but the team may be better off with him in a 3C role, this year for sure.

Raffl - G - Voracek
Bellemare - Schenn - Gagner
Read - Couturier - Simmonds

The second line will likely be a little lax defensively so I'd expect them to produce more offense, which unfortunately means the 3rd line has to take on more defensive responsibilities.

Another key for me is game situation. I balance the workload early in the game and when we're up by 2 or more. Give Couturier more offensive opportunities then. In a close one Couturier is playing shut down center from midway in the second to the final whistle.

I think PEB can be a 20 point guy is he gets a chance to play up the lineup as a middle six LW.

Well, Zac was the worst if you include CF/60, points scored and traditional +/-.
