I would like to see 4 teams in 8 divisions...but like this alignment:
Eastern Conference:
Atlantic Division: New Jersey, NY Rangers, NY Islanders, Philadelphia
Northeast Division: Boston, Montreal, Quebec, Ottawa
Southeast Division: Washington, Carolina, Tampa Bay, Florida
Mideast Division: Buffalo, Toronto, Columbus, Pittsburgh
Western Conference:
Central Division: Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis, Nashville
Northwest Division: Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Minnesota
Southwest Division: Dallas, Colorado, Arizona, Las Vegas
Pacific Division: Los Angeles, San Jose, Anaheim, Vancouver
Here what the schedule would be:
division opponents: 2 teams 5 times each and 1 team 4 times (14 games)(alternating of which team you play 4 or 5 times a season & also alternating extra home game each time the 2 teams play each other 5 times a season)
rest of the opponents in your conference: 3 times each (36 games)(alternating extra home game every season)
non-conference opponents: 2 times each (32 games)
14 + 36 + 32 = 82 games
Playoffs: The top 8 teams in each conference will make the playoffs seeded 1-8 with the division winners seeded 1-4 (this way, only the division winners will have home ice advantage in the first round). The rest of the playoff format will be the same as it was from 1996-2013. |
